first 15 22

Helo everyone, I'm new to the forum, I just ordered my first M&p 15 22 today I'm looking forward to getting it soon and I was looking for advice on for anything I might need to be ware of.

I have read some of the past threads, is there some kind of problem with the original extractor or has that been cleared up, mine will be a brand new second generation.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Grab a bunch of ammo and magazines and shoot the snot out of it. The range result(s) will dictate wants and needs to your personal preferences.

Don't over lubricate, this is NOT a centerfire AR15. 22lr ammo is dirty and over oiling will gum things up after a while. I lube mine with 4 drops, one on each rail of the bolt and 2 on the recoil spring assembly.

Most of all, enjoy the new rifle! They are fun

The common issues that seem to plague the gen2 (I have gen1 never had an issue at all) are FTF/FTE.

Many are buying the VQ or Tacticool22 extractors (never had an issue with my factory one but do have VQ installed - although they seem to be experiencing some QC issues recently).

Before you buy a replacement first check the main fixes for these problems, all of which are available searching this forum or youtube.

1 - Load the mags correctly.
2 - Don't hold the rifle by the mag or rest it off the mag.
3 - Do NOT overlube.
4 - Check correct position of ejector and fix if necessary.
5 - Remember that any work done ie handguard removal or FH removal....the barrel must be clamped not the upper.

Wouldn't hurt to get a barrel nut tool, which allows you to make sure the barrel nut is tight.

I hope that you have a great first outing with your new 15-22. They are fantastic rifles.

Most likely you won't have any issues, so go shoot it. Mine function well with most rounds, but they do not like Winchester ammo of any kind. We shoot a lot of mini mags, CCI standard velocity, Blazers, Aguila, and Remington Golden Bullets.

You'll want extra magazines if you don't have them already. Look at CDNN Sports online. They have them for $14.99. Don't pay twice that at a local shop unless you are desperate. You may want to consider a McFadden loader if you are going to shoot a lot. It loads the magazines properly without you having to even think about it. It's not really faster, but it is easier on the fingers.

Speaking of that, read the manual for proper loading technique. If you don't load the magazines the way it says to the rounds will not stagger, and you will have issues. Follow the instructions and everything will probably be fine.

I have second generations, and had extractor problems, with practically every round and getting slammed from the bolt, after firing.

What I found and notice the extractor pin wasn't smooth but ruff. So I took small fine file, and smoothes out the extraction pin.

I have now fired over 5,000 rounds without a single problem. Saved a trip shipping it to S&W, or ordering parts.

Great advice everyone, thanks to all of you, it's especially good to know about not over oiling it because I most certainly would have.

I'm looking into getting more magazines before it arives, that way I can load up before I go to the range.

Not planning to replace the extractor unless it breaks but like the idea of smoothing out the rough edges and I wouldn't buy the vq extractor until heard more positive reports on it.
