first 617 action job

Doing the forcing cone will make a big difference in your gun. My groups almost shrunk in half after doing mine. Using a Power's Custome Kit will help a lot. I used an Apex Hammer but did all the internals myself after watching Jerry Miculek's video and working in a gunshop for a while.

I use to have a local gunsmith do all my work but he knows I do it all by myself now except when I really get stuck, like timing my revolve and then I use him.

Know your limitations and keep your Dremel away from your gun.

Files, stones and books the gunsmiths I've experienced here suck one told me he adjusted a timney trigger and charged me timney said no one adjusted it another had my barrel for six months to drill and tap put a punch mark on it then said he couldn't do it really !! I'll do it myself thank you very much !!

I fitted a oversized cylinder stop today on the 617 went from 5-.006 slop to 0 bore to cylinder perfectly lined up I'm suprised the slop on such a low round gun I did get a power custom target trigger but want to try the stock mim first. The mim has serations the power custom smooth I'm not sure I care for the serations any comments on triggers ?

I'm sure I still have it in my garage. I'll check tomorrow and you can borrow it. Where are you?

I hate to say it by I have my kit for the .38 but can't find the one for the .22. Sorry. I think I lent it to a friend. I'll check. It's been a while since I did mine so I hope he still has it.

Redneck gunsmithing? The front of my cylinder was pretty rough and had some gouges around the cylinder throats I initially had a. 004-.005 gap but it was inconsistent and rough so I was trying to think of a way to clean up the front of the cylinder throats so I devised this set up and it worked perfectly I'm now getting a consistent. 005 cylinder gap and it cleaned some of the Knicks I know it's extremely important to have very sharp perfect throats for accuracy I didn't want to go further asv I'm going to take a .001 off the forcing cone face and do a 11 degree chamfer I talked to Ron power from power customs for quite a while and he told me to have about .006 cylinder gap my gun shot really well first time out with open sights it has real potential not sure it will come close to my freedom arms but I just need it to kill squirrels and some steel. Here a few pics of my targets and my set up for the cylinder work.just a side note after looking at the "redneck" cylinder set up I drilled a hole same size as cylinder so it wouldn't wobble in hole then pushing down hard and flat turning the cylinder face on 1200 grit paper it works nicely if someone's needs the same job done.
