As my user name implies I'm old(73) ordered my first AR yesterday,impatiently awaiting delivery,by the way it is an MP15 SportII,got it at what I thought was a good price,$529 free shipping,the FDE model,it will be primarily home defense with some range trips,I will ck back when it gets here for tips,thanks

Not as old as you but, I came late to ARs also. Built mine from a kit. I think you'll like it. My black rifle, as I call it, is in 300 Blackout, great milk jug buster.

Only a few years younger, and my Sport II is/was my first actual exposure to the AR platform. Think you'll find it a pleasure to shoot. Minimal recoil, fairly inexpensive ammo, and decently accurate.

I'm retired. Most of my time at the club is during the week so I see quite a few older retired guys shooting while the youngsters are out working for a living . It's not unusual for guys to walk over and start talking about their ARs and asking basic questions. I think the AR panic hooked a lot of folks who probably wouldn't have otherwise purchased an AR, and I think the current rock bottom prices are drawing in more.

AR is Not my favorite but my most fun one. Started with them in 1966 thanks to my Uncle and have pretty much had one ever since and always will. None of mine has ever let me down.

I just bought my first last year off of a fella who was "stocking up." Couldn't pass it up at the price.

I had fired them a good bit, but was never interested enough to own one. I feel the same way about ARs as I do Glocks and the like. Great firearms, super reliable, and fun to shoot. I have guns that do the same thing for me with more pride of ownership.

All that said, my Sport II is pretty accurate (I use open irons mostly), and a lot of fun, with a cheap round to shoot. I think you will enjoy it. Even if you don't shoot much, you can make it your personal Barbie Doll.

Got a couple over the years ...... a 1990s Bushmaster and a M&P w/ tan mag-pul stuff.......... ( I bought if on a whim 2 days before Sandyhook happened and prices doubled)

Don't shoot them much; as til 7/1/17, you couldn't hunt with a semi in Pa...... and I love my CZ .223s ; the American and FS/Mannlicher models.

I have 20 round mags for SHTF and 30rd mags for TEOTWAWKI....... and 10rd mags for everything else.

The boys and I will shoot the 15-22 a lot more ...... it's a good understudy.

Read the manual several times, get a CAT M4 tool to help clean the bolt & carrier and enjoy. Oh, ignore a lot of stuff on the internet. I've been using the system since about 1970 and I do believe there's more BS about ARs on the internet than about sex & drugs combined.

It's a great geezer gun (me too) except for having to pick up the brass.

There are a lot of expensive tools out there, that are not really needed, unless you have a lot of disposable income and want a new gadget. I clean my AR bolt with a stainless brush, toothbrush and brake cleaner and then lube in properly.

I'm an older geezer (75) and I just bought my first AR, a S&W Sport II, last September, when it looked like Hillary might win. I also have numerous long guns and hand guns, and never really was interested in an AR.. But, if the S++t hits the fan, I didn't want to be the only one at a gunfight with a knife.. Stocked up on 2500 rounds of ammo and 10 -20 round magazines and 15 - 30 round magazines..I was in the military for 21 years, so I was familiar with the M-16's.. Got a red dot sight and a Nikon P223 3x scope for it and was very surprised with the accuracy of this thing.. Got it zero'd, shot a couple of hundred rounds and now it sits in an accessible place in my home.. I never had any problems with my Sport II and in addition, my wife even likes to shoot it.. Personally, I think it is the best deal out there for an AR type rifle..
