Met the youngsters this morning at 6, well it was more like 7:20 when they got there. We set up on a farm pond. It was 21 degrees and breezy.
Called in several bunches, even had a couple land right in front. We got 14 for seven of us. Truly a good hunt with lots of geese flying and looking us over. My first experience with goose decoys. I think I may want to go again.
Bad weather on the way tomorrow and Monday. Will probably freeze all the ponds this week.

Geese over decoy's is a lot of fun . I used to hunt on private land that had a 20 acre pond but that was mostly jump them off in the morning or get them flying in at dusk.
But then I put in a 3 man pit blind in the middle of a 400x800 yard field got 3 dozen goose decoy shell's and a few call's . There is nothing like a large flock of Canada's coming in with there wing's set when you jump up and start shooting . A lot of fun but I've not done it in a few years but still have everything so maybe in a few year's when I retire I'll get back into it.

I love shooting geese.

This is me and my oldest boy. He's taller than I am now.

Tom they are a pain if you try to pluck them . I learned the best way IMO was to just breast them and roast in the oven making sure not to over cook them just leave them a little on the pink side and slice thinly with some brown mushroom gravy and wild rice.

Breasts and thighs in a crock pot with chicken broth and cream of mushroom soup, seasoned slightly and use meat tenderizer lightly. Cut the breasts in quarters. I always soak waterfowl in water in the fridge three days, changing the water each day, before freezing or cooking.
Nothing like feet down and wings cupped in your face. Congratulations.
I favor ducks because of where we live and hunt.

I'll never forget the first time I was in on a goose hunt over dekes. Everyone knows the sound of their calls, but what not as many know is that when they get near close enough to shoot they make as much noise with their wings flapping as with their honking! And, if you keep your brain in your head, they aren't that tough a target at 30-odd yards. And on land, they don't run particularly fast. In MY family we always skin our birds, because our take is that any sour flavor disappears with the fat. And, once skinned and gutted, geese are terrific eating, especially if not overcooked. It shouldn't take more than one semi successful outing to make a believer out of ya!
