Hi guys, first post and first gun to own. i used to shoot all kinds of guns when i was a kid but its been a good 7 years since ive touched a firearm. And i missed it alot.
So i was in the market for a 40 cal semi auto pistol. Had a typical first time gun budget of $300-$350. Ive always liked Smith and Wesson. So after looking at their guns i first was going to go with a Sigma. Brand new it was $300, after reading all the reviews i figured i would be able to make the hard trigger pull work, infact i was planning to do the spring mod and polish acouple of the internal parts. Luckily i held off on my purchase due to the holidays. FInally got to shoot a sigma at the range. Technically I shot it twice, my first and my last time! lol That gun will def work for self defense but i plan to go to the range more and i just dont see myself having fun shooting that gun alot.
Ended up picking up a police trade-in sw99 for $350 shipped. Picked it up from ffl last night. The gun itself is in great condition. Hardly any cosmetic wear and the barrel/insides look good, just need to clean it, which i plan to do tonight. I really like the weight and feel of this gun, it only came with one strap though. Can anyone tell which size it is? It feels good in my hand but my wife hands are smaller and she needs the next size down. Wonder how much smith and wesson will charge me for it.

Luckily it came with the revised magazines so thats one less headache that i could come across with this gun. I will be taking it to the range this saturday and post a range report.

Also, im not bashing sigma, its a great gun, just not what i was looking for.

That's the LARGE size backstrap. If you send S&W a butt-kissing email they might send you a medium and small for free.

Thanks for identifying the strap for me. A butt kissing email? Damn it man, i hate kissing butt, but if it saves me some money, guess its worth a shot. Im not the original owner but i grew up shooting various SW revolvers that my dad owned. Hence the reason for me wanting a SW but in semiauto since i like more ammo capacity. Never know when the zombies are coming...

Is there anything in particular i should add in my email that might help me get atleast the med strap for free?
thanks

Congradulations of a fine purchase. My daily CCW is a SW99-40. These are vastly underated as a carry weapon. You did well at the 350 price point. Enjoy that fine hand weapon!

Just came back from the range. couldnt be happier with my purchase. Shot over 200 rounds without a hiccup whatsoever. We shot WWB in 165 and 180 grain, Federal Champion Valupak 180 and even shot afew mags of Monarch hollows. Not to mention my bro had brought his gf and her sister and they were shooting it too. Limp wrist central, and still no issues lol. We got to the range kind of late so couldnt quite see how accuracy was. But plan on going tomorrow just me and my bro to dial in the sights if needed.
Funny thing is my cousin also tagged along with a S&W 357 revolver, forget to see what model it was because i was having too much fun shooting it to even check. That thing was beast. The guys on the lane to the right of us moved because they said the sound and force was too much for them. haha

Welcome back to the world of shooting and S&W. The SW99 is a great pistol and I have a weakness for S&W 357 revolvers (some people just don't appreciate the classics). Once you get some trigger time on your SW99 it will be very accurate for you. Enjoy your new pistol.

Went out to the range again today. This time it was me, my brother and my dad. Dad brought along his 4th gen glock 23 in 40 cal. We shot alittle over 350 rounds between the 2 guns. More through the sw99 since i had 2 mags and my dad only brought 1. We rotated shooting guns, the glock 23 is really nice, i enjoyed shooting it alot. But i seemed to shoot better out of my sw99, go figure lol . I like the sights on mine better than those on the glock. As far as accuracy i was able to have decent groups of about 4 inches at 7 yards. I can def do way better once i get some more time with this gun.
We shot WWB 180/165 and some Federal American eagle 180. All fed without and failures through both guns. The eagle seemed to shoot better than the WWB but its abit more expensive. Federal Champion works for me, especially since its $25 for the 100 pack at walmart.
Im having alot of fun with this gun, and now my bro is talking about getting a hand gun too.
