I went to the Oaks Gun Show in SE PA today. This was a 1500 table show. I only found two S&W revolvers that were worth buying and one of them I already have,

The first - the one I have - was a Model 24-3 with a 4" barrel. While everybody clamors for the 3" Lew Horton 24-3's, they made 5K of them, there were only 2,625 made of the 4" variant. He had a price tag on it of $999 and I watched somebody walk away because they didn't want to pay sales tax. What a maroon.

Second gun I probably would have bought, but wasn't prepared to deal right then and there and the seller was kind of a jerk. I ask if he had a business card. No. (Heck, even I have business cards). Started to ask if he'd write down his phone number on the back of one of my cards. No. Only wanted to sell it right there, right now. I don't think he was an FFL and his head probably would have exploded if I'd have asked if he'd ship it to NJ (my FFL). I don't chase people to give them my money and he must not have wanted to sell the gun very badly.

OK, what was it? A Model 25-2, 6.5" barrel in .45 Colt. It had a late N prefix serial number and a box numbered to the gun - but it looked like it was written in roller-ball or felt tip marker - not ball point. Small red flag. He had a price of $1250 on the gun, which I would have gladly paid, had he not been such a jerk.

Redeeming feature of the day was that the Cokes I won at auction last week came in the mail while I was gone - and they are nicer than the pictures.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

I'll gladly reveal the name of the shop with the 24-3 if anyone is interested. They are nice people and had two Great Pyrenees in the booth with them.

I was at Oaks Friday and looked at that 24-3. It was a nice gun, I would've bought it if I had the money to spare. The shop that has it is one I've done business with for over 25 years, good people.

Another dealer I've bought numerous guns from had a nice 4" 10-5 round butt, if I hadn't just put new whitewalls on the Olds I probably would've bought it. Hopefully by the time Oaks comes around again in August I'll have some disposable income again. Maybe the selection of older S&W's will be larger too.

Sometimes walking away is the right choice. As far as seller two, if he was a private seller I absolutely get it. The rare occasions I've brought guns to a gun show to sell the amount of nonsense has been crazy, I'd not be giving out my phone number and pretty much insist on it selling there.

1500

i'm still trying to wrap my head around 1500 tables. i've been to the big show, around here, in Houston and i don't know the actual number of tables but way, way shy of 1500. it would probably be difficult to find anything specific with that kind of acreage to cover.

I know the feeling!
Have also only been to one Gunshow post Covid.
Socorro, NM, not quite 1500 tables!
More like 50?
Lots of jewelry, fru - fru, expensive ammo,
And yes! Guns!
Didn't buy anything but it was great to go!

Congratulations on getting out to a gunshot........my first one post Covid was the April Tulsa gun show, somewhere between 4000, and 5000 tables.......it was a good day..........

What grips were on the 24?

That would have been the HGCA show in the Astrohall, it was advertised as 1200 tables which was fairly accurate even though they were 6 foot tables...That was at least a couple of decades ago...HGCA shows these days in The Heights are miniscule by comparison, but still good...They have one coming up in Humble which should be bigger; I'm thinking of getting a couple of tables myself......Ben

Lately finding a set of tires has been as difficult as finding cheap ammo, at least around here.

Plan on going to my 1st post covid gun show this coming Saturday. It will be my first Michigan gun show also. Don't plan on finding much, but who knows? Maybe some JERKY? Bob

Pizza Bob, lets see the cokes you bought. I bought a pair a month ago, they were not cheap.
I have been to the Fort Worth show and the San Antonio show in the last 3 weeks. Ammo prices are coming down a little, but gun prices are too high.
There were cased 29-2's, mod 57's, and 25-2's from $2000 to $2200.
There is one dealer that has 3 tables full of desirable Smiths but pricing is off the chart. I saw a 686 with 8 3/8's barrel, rubber grips marked 1400. And a 4" 686 marked 1000. Actually there were lots of Pre lock revolvers at the shows, just too dang high.

True.

I wrote about my good luck here...

Even a Blind Squirrel...

I just reread that thread and realized that I had forgotten to look to see if the stocks were numbered. They were and the serial number dates to 1956 - 57 which means these were either on, or destined to be on one of the early .44 Mags.

I bought these outright on an auction site. The preceding set came on a gun that I bought (haven't looked to see if they are numbered). Actually bought the gun for the stocks. Paid about the same for the gun as I would have if it was wearing regular checkered, football, target stocks. From the pictures I thought the gun had some cosmetic issues and was pleased to find, when I received it, that it didn't - just some photographic aberration.

Adios,

Pizza Bob
