I bought this on the forum about 6 months ago and shot it for the first time today. Been busy with work.

It didn't shoot the coated bullets (125 and 158 gr.) very well. But, it did like the plain lead Zeros.

I'm going to send it off to Frank Glenn for a trigger job and shoot it in our local Bullseye matches.

Unfortunately the front sight is a little rounded and doesn't give a crisp outline. I'll have him replace it. Otherwise, the gun is sweet and a keeper.

This is the first time I've owned the combat grips. I like them a lot. They feel great.

What a pleasure it is to see groups shot at a range beyond 7 feet, 15 yards, or some such. It seems Dave knows and understands what these things are all about.

I'll second that! No way that I can come close to that with open sights but I routinely shoot my 586/686s at 50 yards either using a Burris Fastfire , Ultradot or an old Burris 1x bullseye target dot scope.

Ralph you'd probably beat up on me. I'm new to Bullseye and decided to only shoot what I like...revolvers. I tried single action in rapid & timed fire but I prefer double action. Double action with one arm is a learning curve.

My eyes are 50 and need reading glasses. The lens I use for iron sights is about half the power of my reading glasses. It's still doable with irons but the red dots are easier.

Model 14 whatever the dash is never a mistake!
I've known a gentleman(a Major in our armed forces(Canadian))who asked to be buried with his model 14.Even in his early '80,his targets with it at 25 yds were putting my shooting to shame!
Major Despaties,I salute you!

Moo Moo, what is Service Match Pistol? I'm aware of the Service Pistol matches but I don't think a revolver is allowed. Thanks

My 14-5 may not the most accurate model 14 I have but it's really nice.
I had this one out over the weekend for a little range time.
Sorry guys I didn't save any target was shooting with some friends Zombie style head shots only out to 25 yards.

That's incredible shooting Dave. I can't do that using a two hand hold. There's a bullseye shooter I see at my range on occasion and it just amazes me the shots y'all make with a one hand hold.
Hotcha! :D:D

I spoke to Frank Glenn today and his turn around time is in the normal range for him...about 2 weeks. I really like working with him. He has done some very nice trigger jobs for me and he's fast, no nonsense, honest, etc. I've had a lot of revolver work done by Clark Custom in the past but their turn around times are long. A pleasing double action trigger job really helps my accuracy and increases my overall shooting pleasure.

I think I'll send him this Model 17 also and use it for my .22 match gun. I like the balance of the long skinny barrel.

While it's with him I'll have this rear sight installed on the K22. I've tried most of the options for aftermarket S&W rear sights (LPA, Weigand) and the Bowen sight is the best and gives a better sight picture than the factory sight.

Rough Country Old-Style S&W Sight with blank, undrilled tang [RCSWSBL] - $129.95 : + Bowen Classic Arms +, Parts Store

One last thought on dry firing the S&W 22's. I put a rubber o-ring in the back of the frame to soften the blow of the hammer. The o-ring goes on the outside of the frame mounted firing pin. When the hammer drops it doesn't hit the firing pin. Been dry firing on a regular basis for the last month and no issues. Seems to be the solution. My accuracy has increased in double action with the .22.

Just having fun thinking about guns...

Here's the LPA rear sight. It's kind of ugly. For some reason I've never warmed up to it.

The two guns on the right have the Bowen sights. The second gun from the left has the Weigand replacement blade.

The Weigand gives a good sight picture and is a cheap option since you only replace the blade. The downside is it only comes in one height and some installations can wiggle around a little.

Smith Wesson Rear Sight Blade K L N

For front sights I like Dawson Precision the best and go with a .110 or .115 wide front sight on the 5" and 6" barrels. Fiber Optic is great for plinking.
https://dawsonprecision.com/s-w-pinned-fiber-optic-front-sights/

Anyway, I've tried a bunch of different sights and that's what I like.

Moo Moo, what is Service Match Pistol? I'm aware of the Service Pistol matches but I don't think a revolver is allowed. Thanks

The Service Pistol Match shot here in Australia is open to centre fire revolvers and semi autos. It is shot at distances of 50, 25, 10, and 7 yards with various time limits and shooting positions. I have linked a guide to the match below.

PA service pistol training & matches, canberra

6" barrelled Revolvers tend to dominate this match due to the accuracy needed at the 50 yard section.

Dave, how about posting a picture of your 17 with the dry fire O ring installed.

Many years ago, shot a one-hole group at 25' indoors using 148 grain wadcutters with my favorite 14-3. The next target, I shot the ten out with the first shot. I was shooting one-handed standing, single action. Well, there was a hint of the top of the 1 left.

Wish I could still buy reloads like those. Wish I had the time to shoot as much as I used to. That gun has been imprinted in my brain since those days. The possibilities of a new bore and great reloads are astounding.
It helped being young with good eyes, too. I should take a picture of the target, which I still have. The range asked for it, but I kept that one.

Love hearing people using their 14 for competition. Reminds me of a story someone shared here years back of the Russians shooting their Nagant revolvers in practice to match with the USA. They showed up match day with Model 14s and whipped us, so the story went. Guess that was a real bummer seeing those in their hands.

Frank Glenn is a champ!
I like that long barrel k22. I don't recall seeing one before.
Thanks

I have one too, a 17-4, When people ask me why such a long barrel, I tell them because it gets me closer to the target.
