First P&R Smith, 29-2

After watching too many Hickok45 videos and Dirty Harry movies, I had to ditch the Taurus M44. It was actually a wonderful shooter. I felt like I needed something smooth and classic.

Saw this 29-2 listed online on Guns International. Was at Cabelas in Indiana for $779.99. I think I did alright. Although it came with vintage rubber Mustang grips. They felt great, but I like wood. I have no idea how to tell if the bluing is original, but I guess it is.

The Mustang grips are available if anyone is interested. No idea what the value is. I replaced them with Altamont. New to the forum and assume there is a marketplace of some sort.

The red sight insert arrived, crumbled in the case from shipping trauma I guess. I used an old gift card to make forms around the channel and 30 min epoxy mixed with a drop of Chevy engine red model paint to fill it back in. Was pretty easy.

Now that was an ingenious solution! I never would have thought of doing that to replace the missing insert!

midnighthammer, keep your rubber grips!!! I put the same Altamont grips on my Model 625-9 and they made the N-frame revolver uncomfortable to shoot. I put the original Hogue rubber grips back on and shoot much better with them.

S&W Model 625-9 "Mountain Gun" in .45 Colt with Altamont grips (pretty, but uncomfortable).

S&W Model 625-9 "Mountain Gun" in .45 Colt with original Hogue grips (ugly, but comfortable).

I found the Altamont grips too narrow. Much more narrow that the older S&W target grips. I have the older original target grips on my N-frame Model 25-5 and these are wider than today's Altamont grips. Very comfortable shooting.

Thanks for considering my opinion on grips. I have Altamont grips on some of my other S&W revolvers and love them; just not on a N-frame revolver.

It was so simple even I didn't mess up! Although I let it dry a little too long. Or not enough. Apparently there is a sweet spot when to take the forms off and the epoxy was trying to come out of the channel when I took the forms off.

Nice looking grips you have there. Rubber grips are great for shooting. I'd keep them too.

I have only one M29-2 and haven't had the chance to shoot it yet.

A good friend just gave me 48 rounds of his hand loads for me to shoot. I'll buy a box of nice self defense ammo and maybe one day I'll get more reloads to shoot.

Dang. I sold the rubber grips last night and am dropping them in the mail today. I should have kept them, but as cheap as they are I could get Hogue grips for less than what I sold the Mustang grips for. If I really need them.

I was looking for original target grips but settled on the Altamont because of price mostly.

I'm going to take the 29 for it's maiden voyage with me on lunch break. We shall see.. Maybe I'll be ok. I'm kind of a glutton for punishment. (pretty, but uncomfortable) <--I've ran with a girl like this once.

I bought 250 .41 Magnum rounds from them and will NEVER purchase ammo from them again.

I had to have all 250 rounds re-seated and re-crimped. They NEVER replied to my emails or phone call.

It took them 3 weeks to ship my order.

There's a reason its cheap.

I know the appeal of the P&R N-frames. I have a 58 that is excellent, and a '70s that's nearly perfect as well. What nice revolvers!

Range trip went pretty well. There is one within walking distance from work and I get an hour for lunch. The new grips didn't beat me up too bad, but I see what you mean when you shoot 6 Magnums quickly in double action.
Mix of specials and magnum and SA/DA. Seems to print a little high.
