I have lurked here for a while and finally "pulled the trigger", pun intended, on a Model 10-5. The serial number is C926xxx. What can the experts on this forum tell me about this gun? It locks up well and has little wear except on the grips. It was probably carried but not shot much. I would appreciate any thoughts on how to polish it as well as what I should do to the grips. I will post pictures as soon as I figure out how and my camera returns from a trip with my daughter.

This one is likely from 1967. They used the C prefix from 1948 until they reached C999,999 started over with D 1 for 1968.

Most often seen in 4" barrel length they were also made in 2" (square and round butt configuration), 5", and 6". The 2" models tend to be most popular and bring the most. There is following for the 5" length and these tend to run second in value. You don't indicate what barrel length you have.

It would be faster and cheaper to simply buy stocks in good shape and swap them. The K frame stocks are easy to find in nice condition. The 1967 guns probably still had the style with the diamond around the screw. This changed around 1968 to the style without this feature. If authenticity isn't important then any set of stocks will work.

Is this my 10-5 with a 2" barrel and square butt. It has been extensively decorated.

Here is what the round butt looks like. Note the diamond in the stocks. This is probably what yours should have.

Thanks for your reply SaxonPig. It is a 4 inch, tapered barrel with the round butt. Your grips look like they are in better shape than mine. I understand from other posts on this forum that Plus-P is OK?

Shoot as many +Ps as you can afford if it's in good shape. You won't hurt it.

Watch out

Model 10's are very addictive !..........

I will say that my model 10-6 is a lazer. It points and shoots so nautral with the org grips and a tyler t on it. Hope your is just as fun and enjoyable.

Congratulations on the purchase and a great choice for a first S&W revolver

As a new to me, gun, what would be the first things you should do when you get it home? Is it take off the grips and clean it? With what would you do that? I have heard on this forum about something like a wax but have not had time to go and research it yet. I'll also need to wait for my daughter to get home so she can help me put on the pics.
