First Range trip with 15-22

Made my first trip to the range yesterday with my new 15-22. Now this defines fun, WOW! Put about 250 rounds through it. Experienced 2 FTE's with the first mag (CCI mini-mag). Ran about 9 more mags with Federal Auto Match with only 1 more FTE on the last mag. In all 3 cases, it still loaded the next round (which I thought would have been virtually impossible)with the casing getting caught and smashed by the bolt before it got out. Is this typical?, I mean, still chambering the next round? Maybe I'm don't fully understand the cycle process. I am so glad it seems to like the Auto-Match ammo since I have 4 more boxes of 325 and 4 more on order, whew! (I have a Ruger SR22 that chews it up as well). I put a generic Red Dot ($25) on it that did really well for a couple mags until the dot turned into an abong, ghosting I guess, but took me a bit to determine which side of the oblong was center. Out of no where, it decided to shoot way high & right, almost off the paper. It's going back. I just ordered a Leapers UTG 5th Gen 4in ITA Red/Green Dot Sight w/ 2 QD Mounts, $49.97. Ordered it through Sears, shipping from OpticsPlanet.com. Had a sears gift card from Christmas so my out of pocket was the same as the generic one. Also put a UTG Super Duty Tactical Ops BIPOD on it, really solid and mounted easily using the 2" rail that's included with the new Sport. Before the generic red dot went south, I was able to group an entire mag at about 40' feet into about 1 1/2", except for 1 flyer, it was almost a single hole on the target. I wasn't expecting that good of accuracy. The only negative I have about the 15-22 is that it's a little hard to get to the ramp to get it clean. I love this gun!

Glad to hear things went well with the rifle.

As far as cleaning the feed ramp, Q-tip dipped in solvent. Let it do it's work then scrub with the small end of a M16 cleaning kit brush like this:

Most of the time after letting solvent do its work the crude wipes right off.

There are current threads here you can read discussing a new 3rd party extractor. It is cheap & probably worth getting, especially if you are having some failures.

If you really want to clean it well, either make or purchase a barrel nut wrench. With the barrel off, you can easily clean all those previously hard to get to nooks & crannies.

Sounds like a great time. I've been twice with mine and about to go for a third time. It is super fun to shoot.

I'm considering the SR22 as well, do you like it?

I absolutely love the SR22. I bought it because my daughter was beginning to show interest in shooting. My first trip to the range with it, she went with me, she put 485 rounds through it. (I got 1 mag worth and went the next day alone to get to fire it much). In all those rounds, we had 2 FTE issues, one in the first mag and 1 in the 3rd mag. I now have probably 1500+ rounds through it and those are still the only issues I've had. It seems to love the Federal Auto-Match that's why I was glad to find the 15-22 seems to like them as well. I probably do way too much research before I "pull the trigger" on buying but I think I've done pretty well on prices: $369 for the 15-22 and $308 for the SR22 (I got the one with the Stainless/Aluminum slide) I have a buddy that holds an FFL and in both cases he told me those were better prices than he could get. He's just a solo/part-time act so he doesn't order 20-30 at a time so I'm sure some of the bigger players get better prices.

Thanks for the feedback! I paid 349 for my 15-22, which I think was an outstanding price. I'm like you, I research like crazy before I purchase. I added 40 for the FFL and background check.

Best I've found so far is about 327 for the 4.5" barrel sr22. I want to get it so I have something my son can shoot as well. I like it because I'm a lefty and everyone else is a righty, so the ambidextrous features seem pretty good to me. Sounds like it might be a great idea.

Enjoy your 15-22. I got mine out to an outdoor range with 50meter ranges and a plinking range, so I had a ton of fun shooting at all sorts of targets. I don't think you can beat the cost per round, that's for sure!

I bought my new M&P 15-22 (2nd gen) two days ago for $399 and got out to the range today. Wow, what a blast!!! I shot 500 rounds of Winchester M-22 ammo with a few stove pipes...stopped by my LGS and had them help me install a $50 Truglo scope...needed 1/2" risers and new rings. Then, I went back to the range, zeroed in the scope at 50 yards and put another 200 rounds through it. Wow, this is a great shooter!
