Hit the range today, FINALLY, for the first time with my new Sport. It was my first time firing an AR, and I really enjoyed it. LOTS of fun! I found this to be a really fun gun to shoot; obviously I have nothing to compare it to AR-wise, but I thought it was great. I chose to do a 50-meter zero, though I did so at 25 meters (I used targets that specifically allow a 50-meter zero at 25-meter range), and I was really pleased with the groups I was able to achieve, even when considering that I was only shooting 25 meters down range. Five five-round groups, and I had it zeroed. Lots of fun to shoot, I really like the trigger (though again, no other AR trigger to compare it to), and it worked flawlessly. Really happy with the purchase.

It sure is easy to burn ammo -- I'll say that much!

Anyway, NICE gun.

Glad you enjoyed it. I shot mine this past weekend and also had a blast. The sights were dead on out of the box but the furthest I shot was about 40-50 yards.

I've shot AR's in the past but this is my first time owning one. I'm very pleased I chose the Sport II as my first.

Have fun and safe shooting.

Congrats, they are a blast to shoot. Get out to a range that can get you in the 200+ yards and really see how accurate they are even with the irons.

If you get a 10 rd mag for it it may curb the obligation to fire 30, just because.
Im glad you enjoy your new rifle. The Sport is probably the best all round AR out there.

Whoa, whoa. Let's not get all crazy now. I love my Sport, but there are many rifles that are better, even some of the S&W rifles. If you want to say "best rifle for the money", I'm down with that. But not "best overall AR".

jsimpson, mine weren't "dead on," but not too bad at all; I was surprised that it was as close as it was. Windage was good, but I was about 2.5" low of my aim point at 25 meters (needed to be about 1.2" low to be zeroed at 50). So some simple adjustment of the front post sight to bring it up about an inch and a quarter, and it was good.

kadonny -- the range I shot at only goes about 100 yards; it would be interesting to see what I'd do at 200 with irons...it might not be pretty, given that my eyes aren't quite what they used to be! ;) I would like to try 200 yard shooting with it though (but I'd probably need an optic...)

Definitely a blast to shoot them, though.

Jimbo -- I bought a Colt M4 carbine in .22LR, so in theory I can burn up .22 cal. ammo and not quite as much .223. That said, it sure is fun firing the .223! It's a fine line for me between wanting to accumulate a decent stockpile of ammo, while also realizing that a stockpile does you no good if you can't shoot it well (which, of course, requires rounds downrange!)

No worries, my eyes are not what they used to be either. Still, you'd be surprised at what you can hit with irons....if you know how to shoot them. My range currently goes out to 300 and they have steel plates out to 400. I can hit paper at 200 with irons and I can easily ring steel at 400 with a measly 2.5x scope. Again, it's suprising what you can actually hit when you hunker down and put your mind to it.

Good luck with the rifle, enjoy it!

I bought a S&W Sport II and it looks like it will be a nice rifle. I hope to get out and zero it with the Nikon P223 3x9x40mm scope I added this week. I just got out of the hospital so I'm on light duty for a week. I think this rifle will be an excellent entry level AR and meet my needs.

I also have a DPMS AR 15 that I've had for 2 years and it eats everything and has never failed to fire. With the same scope it shoots my reloads into 1 inch at 100 yards so if the Sport II matches that I will be happy.

I'll be interested to hear of your impressions of your Sport II, one you shoot it. I'll be curious to hear how its accuracy compares to your DPMS. I know in my case, I was pleased with the accuracy; here is what I managed (at 25 meters with the irons)...

My first 3 groups...

For reference, the circle at the center of the target is just over 1 1/2" dia. -- 1 11/16" to be exact.

Ignoring the two shots to the right, with the x's in them (my friend shot those two with his rifle), the first group (the very first rounds through the rifle) was nice and tight, but low. I adjusted the front post sight, and shot the second group (which is accidentally labelled "3" on my target, but was actually the second group). Not a good group -- partially because a guy with a shotgun was blasting dirt and rocks in close proximity to the target while I was shooting! :) Still, I was able to ascertain that I was now shooting high, and a little left, so I adjusted downward, and to the right. The third group (accidentally labelled "2" on the target) was "good" in my judgement in terms of windage, but a bit low, so I adjusted upward slightly, and shot the final two groups, in the next pic --

My last two...

Here, in "group 4," I felt that I probably was still just a tad low. I made one more small adjustment upward, and fired the last group, group 5. I left it at that; I'll fine tune a bit next time, when the range isn't full of other shooters.

Anyway, bottom line, I was pleased with that, shooting factory loads (American Eagle .223), and my first time shooting an AR (and first time shooting a rifle without a scope in probably 20 years!)

I was pretty pleased with these groups. Seems to me, from my perspective, that in the right hands, these rifles are pretty doggone accurate. Hopefully you are as pleased as I am, fyimo, once you shoot yours.

Recently zeroed my early Sport with the Nikon P223 3x9x40
at 100 yds and couldnt be happier. 1 1/8" with Federal Value Pak 55gr. If I didnt drop 1 shot just below one of the 1" squares on the sighter target it would have been more like 3/4".

I shot mine off hand at 150-160 yards today with the iron sights just as they came from the factory. Once I dialed in the drop for the ammo I was hitting minute of man no problem. For the price this rifle is hard to beat IMO. I've shot other budget AR's and none of them were as nice as the Sport. I still haven't had a single feeding issue with several types of ammo already tested from really good to plinking ammo. Today I was shooting fairly decent plinking ammo and doing just fine with it IMO (PMC X-TAC 55 gr. 5.56)
