First Revolver

My birthday is next weekend and my better half had consistently asked me what I wanted. I threw some random things out there and she asked me what I wanted the most. I've always wanted a revolver since first shooting once some 10 odd years ago and I specifically wanted a Smith and Wesson .357, so we set out searching last weekend.

I ended up with this 27-3 4" from 1985. It's not in pristine shape, but I'm also not a collector. Wanted something I would enjoy for years to come. Can't wait to get out and shoot it this weekend. Now to find some .357 ammo locally. That may prove more difficult in these parts though.

Shoot that 27 and post pictures of the targets. For your wife's birthday, my wife is fond of the model 19 she got for her birthday. And I am not kidding about it being her pistol.

I can do that for sure. She closes her eyes a bit when shooting, working on it, she asked for something with less of a bang. So the plan is to get her a little .22 so she can work up slowly. When I can get her not to close her eyes when shooting my 9mm she's got pretty good grouping. So I'm due time!

She might be fine with shooting .38 Spl. from your .357.

That is one of the great things about the .357 revolver. You can shoot .357 magnum loads, not so magnum loads (38 Special) or minor loads (38 wadcutters). Something for everyone! It is why my first handgun 50+ years ago was a S&W Highway Patrolman. And I still own it today - along with a bunch of other .357 revolvers.

Plus one on the 38s in the modeL 27. If you do go the 22 route little is not necessarily better as the j frames are difficult to master. K frame easier for the beginner. Have fun!

Word to the wise. If you don't want to buy another stay the heck off the forum! But seriously nice Smith for your first and it doesn't need to be perfect. It's a tool, meant to used but cared for. Pick yourself up a set of period correct target grips and you will be set. Can't beat those Hogue's for shooting and nice looking. Don't keep it sealed up in the gun case as it will hold moisture.

Most 38spl cowboy action ammo is even milder than 38spl wadcutters.

My wife enjoys shooting my Model 10, which is K frame and smaller and lighter than your Model 27. More weight = even less felt recoil.

You can source 38spl or 357 ammo on line from Ammoseek, they do a good job of policing vendors listing ammo for sale on the site. But do check the vendor's shipping charges and shipping time.

Thanks for the tip about the case! I've been searching for N frame target grips for a couple of days now actually. The prices on those things are definitely on the higher end, but figured I'll just set an ebay alert or something for new listing and go from there. Definitely not a rush. The Hogue's are super comfortable particularly for my larger hands.

This! I was a shotgunner with a muzzleloader for deer before my wife said she wanted a handgun. I think she may regret it, as now I have a 4 inch 65-3, 3 inch 64-6, 6 inch 27-2, a Shield, and a Kimber 1911 I won at a NRA banquet. Along with a couple more rifles. Still need an L frame, and perhaps a J, either a 60 or 640. Welcome to the club from Nebraska!
