I picked up my first firearm he M&P 15 22 Performance Center. I was told to oil the firearm prior to first use. As I am a first time firearm owner I would appreciate any guidance would prior to taking this to the range.

Clean & Lube

Of the 4 brand new firearms I bought in the last year, the 15-22 PC had by far the most factory dirt in the barrel. Took 4-5 passes to clean mine. When cleaning the bore be careful not to push the ejector out of alignment because even a very small change in the position of the ejector will cause FTEs and stovepipes of the brass casings, aka jamming of the bolt. The only serious lube needed is on the bolt rails which need to move smoothly.

As for ammo, I will use CCI mini mags, CCI Blazer (40g)...or any CCI for that matter. It's just that good. Also Winchester M-22 black copperhead is awesome too. Have fun.

So did Santa get you your 15-22 then?

Hahaha. Hey Ghost!!! Believe it or not, yes he got me one, but it just got it in this morning at my LGS because they were all sold out last weekend. I'm currently working, but I'll be there first thing in the morning to pick it up!! My friend got one last weekend and used some of my ammo (I have a Victory 22). Also, after all that scope talk, I finally narrowed it down to the UTG Bugbuster 3-9x32 and the Bushnell TRS-25 (what do you think of these two?). I'll be ordering one off Amazon this week. If I can figure out how to post pics on here, I'll post it tomorrow (or when my sight comes in). Do you know how? I tried to add a pic before and couldn't figure it out!

JMO, but for shooting less than 100 yards I would go with the red dot. Past 100 yds, I need magnification. As I get older those distances will probably change, but right now with my rather poor (but corrected with bifocals) vision that works for me.

the stock magpul iron sights that came with the rifle work just fine for me. Leaves cash in my pocket for other upgrades.

The 15-22 rental gun at my indoor club just returned from a trip to the mother ship.

The gun was said to have close to 20,000 rounds fired through it and became a smooth bore.

Smith replaced everything except the stock and receiver....no charge.

If that rental gun had a smooth bore I bet it had a lot more rounds then 20K, (unless it was defective)maybe more like 200,000.

I have over 100k thru one of mine and the bore is still fairly healthy. My issue I think I'm having is the muzzle appears to be worn a bit. I'm waiting for the firing pin to break again before I send it in.
