FIRST S&W I THINK IT IS A PER MODEL 10 HELP

FIRST I WANT TO SAY HI.GEORGE FROM NORTH ALABAMA.I JUST PICK UP MY FIRST SMITH.I HAVE BEEN READING THE FORUMS FOR THREE DAYS.I THINK THIS IS A 1905 4TH CHANGE.BUT NOT SURE THIS IS WHAT I KNOW.THERE ARE 3 PAT.DATES ON TOP OF GUN FEB 08 08 SEPT 14 09 DEC 29 14.THE SERIAL NUMBER AT BOTTOM OF THE GRIPS IS 5517XX WITH NO LETTERS.THERE IS A SMALL S&W LOGO ON ONE SIDE AND MADE IN USA ON THE OTHER SIDE.THE BARREL SAYS SMITH AND WESSON ON ONE SIDE AND 38 S&W SPECIAL CTG.UNDER THE GRIPS THERE IS A PENCIL IN SERIAL NUMBER THAT MATCHES THE NUMBER UNDER THE GRIPS.THE NUMBER ON THE CYLINDER IS THE SAME.THIS IS A SQUARE BUTT.AFTER REMOVING THE GRIPS AT THE BOTTOM THERE A PIN. AROUND THE PIN THERE IS A (RIGHT SIDE) K 2 5 7 B.ON THE LEFT SIDE THERE IS A 4 8 8.THIS NUMBERS GO AROUND THE PIN.I WILL TRY TO ADD PICS. ANY AND ALL INFO WILL BE GREAT LIKE.WHEN WAS IT MADE,IS IT A RARE GUN.WHAT KIND OF AMMO.IS IT A KEEPER.THANKS IN ADVANCED.GEORGE.

Great Gun! Good First Post! Welcome!

Your gun is an early M&P, probably just after WW1. I'd guess late 1920's or so. If the markings are correct, I'd bet it chambered for the standard .38 Special Ctg.

Very good camera work by the way.... thanks for sharing!

Just a small suggestion... Using all caps can be just a little annoying to some folks.

Your ID is correct, it is a 1905 4th change. The number on the bottom of the grip frame should match the number I see on the cylinder. I can't quite tell what the first digit is, but this number is the serial number. As Sebago points out it certainly looks like a 1920s era gun you have there, and a 5" barrel, nice! If all is well mechanically you can shoot that thing all you want, be sure just use nothing higher pressured than standard velocity target loads with it. If you shoot it, my guess is the accuracy would be a very pleasant surprise to you.

Its a 1927 gun, and a very nice example. Its not rare - in fact its quite
common. They made about 900,000 in various barrel lengths, finishes, etc.
But, most are not in that good of condition, so from a collector
perspective, its a keeper . Its a good example of the late 1920's
K-frame.

Very nice example for a first pre war revolver. For that matter, pretty darn nice even if it weren't your first! Looks well cared for and likely wasn't shot much, I'd suppose. Welcome to the forum and best wishes for continued success in collecting!

Hmmm...see my post above..."ID this old S&W ???" Your gun looks similar in age, features, etc to mine. To be honest I like yours better, with the original blueing, but I bet they're closely related. Enjoy it !

That is nice. What Mike told you,you can take to the bank. Welcome to the forum. You know you are infected now. Once you buy a Smith Revolver you are hooked for life, and keep right on buying them. The more you buy, the more you want. You will also find out it is a good diet plan to, you will start cutting down on the food bill to buy more Smith's. Later John

Nice M&P. Mike Priwer is extremely knowledgeable on these guns, so you got the good scoop. I think most of us have at least one of these in the collection, and we generally started with the early K frame! It is obvious that you are infected with S&W disease...it is not fatal, but it will generally last the rest of your life!

Thanks for all the great comments.I will be taking the revolver out to the range this week to try it out I will post a range report. I cannot wait.I do believe that bullseye smith is right,I am infected.I think a K 22 will help me move along, only time will tell.Thanks again George
