was there when they shook the ground from 60,000 feet in the air.

I sat on the roof of a hutch at Phan Rang and watched an Arc Light strike. We were miles away and it was still an awesome sight.

I also took a debrief from a flight of F-4s that were mistakenly cleared into an area when B-52s above them dropped on their target. Fortunately no F-4s were harmed but the crews were very very angry at the FAC.

amazingflapjack: Your comment about the earth shaking brought back
memory of long, long, ago. The earth was trembling and a roar could
be heard. When they finally appeared on the horizon it was a flight of
B-36s. An awesome sight and sound.
Another time I was driving South of Las Vegas and a B-52 came over me
from behind. I think they were practicing flying under the radar. It was
not 60,000 feet. More like 60 feet. Or so it seemed. What a thrill.

I read a few months ago that B-1's were being pulled from active duty for much needed upgrades. That may be why the B-52's are back in the war zone.

My son-in-law is a B-52 navigator at Barksdale, preparing to deploy soon. 'Til now it has been to Guam, but with the news out yesterday, I wonder if it might be Qatar. [UPDATE: He is there. Found out last night.]

He's also a "Patch" -- a weapons officer in a rather elite fraternity in the Air Force who complete the weapons school and are qualified as mission planners involving multiple platforms.

I'm real proud of him. Bright, dedicated, handsome as hell, totally enamoured of my daughter, and (speaking as a dad) worthy of her. I am a lucky fellow.:)

i seen a b52 up so close I could count the rivets as it was flying low over a mountain top in the national forest in vt. I was looking for a place to hide.
We were bear hunting.

After they carpet bomb it gives the locals something to do by cleaning the carpets. If you remember carpet bombing brought the NV back to the table to talk peace. It must be a sight to see carpet bombing at a ground level?

War? What if they said a war would start on this spot and no one showed up to fight it? If we only fought for peace that hard as we do for war.

At the Nuclear Museum in Albuquerque, they have a B-52 that was made in 1952 and spent its entire service here at Kirtland Air Force Base. Right now they are attempting to raise money for total repainting. I think they need to raise about $150,000 to get the job done. They truly are something to see.

I knew a helicopter pilot who was taking some officers on a recon fly over in a valley that they had an upcoming operation in. Bill said that the flight was uneventful until a Marine fast mover swooped down and streaked away after a very quick look. While still pondering this, bombs started falling on either side of them. They were evidently between 2 of the 3 bomb paths of an ARC LIGHT. Further questioning revealed that the bird was being blown all over the place, and that debris was blowing all around, and even through, the ship. They obviously made it, but Mama Sahn earned her Piasters when she cleaned his britches after that flight, or so he reported, when pressed.

In the late 70's, I wrote computerized security systems. I installed one at a cruise missile production facility in Kansas. One day, I walked outside when 3 B-52's flying in formation passed over at a couple hundred feet above the ground. It was the most awesome loud sound that I have ever heard. In front of the facility was a B-52 with the ends of its wings weighted down to the ground. I assume that it was some kind of stress test.
