I mean the first time you were in the presence of a law enforcement officer while you were legally carring concealed. What went thru your mind. My story. I was in a bank cashing a paycheck and had two local city police officers, in uniform, walk in. My first reaction was " oh S%&^" It took me a couple of seconds to realize that I was completely legal. Carrieg in a bank is legal here in AZ. Now your turn.

My first time I was in the middle of City Hall talking to two of Officers and didn't think about it till I got out to my car. 'Course I was a city councilman at the time and it was a Saturday and City Hall was closed and it was legal since I was a city official on city business. Does that count?

Recently, I performed a traffic stop on a SUV that I noticed did not have any brake lights at the last stop sign. When I approached and addressed the driver, young fellow in late 20's, he handed me his DL and his carry permit. I took a cursory glance of his CCL to make sure the name and address matched the DL and handed it back to him. I also noticed it had been issued less than a month.

I advised him I was with the sheriff's office and the reason I stopped him was because his brake lights did not appear to be working and could I please see his registration and proof of insurance. He had them out already in the passenger seat and handed them to me and said, "Officer, I am wearing my concealed handgun on me at this time."

As I looked at his proof of insurance I peered at him under the brim of my campaign hat and said, "do you have any intentions of shooting me with it?"

"No sir, I absolutely do not!" he answered.

"Then great, we'll be just fine if you leave it where it is."

He said he didn't know his brake lights were out but had been pulling a boat trailer earlier and maybe he blew a fuse or something. I gave him a verbal warning and sent him on his way with a chuckle because I think I may have bursted his bubble when I wasn't concerned about his legally carried concealed weapon.

I was stopped for a traffic infraction last year (nothing serious, just no complete stop before right on red). When the state trooper approached my car and asked for my license, I gave him my license and CCW permit. He said; "I don't need this, are you carrying a gun now?". I told him I was, he asked where it was, I told him in my front pants pocket. He said, O.K. thanks, just keep it there, I'll be right back. He wrote me my ticket and sent me on the way. I did not have any legal obligation to notify him, but thought it was the best thing to do. No harm, no foul!

This is a bit off topic, but kind of interesting I thought.

During one episode of Sons of Guns, they are given a nickeled snub-nosed revolver by Joe Perry (of Aerosmith) and asked to verify if it had actually belonged to Elvis! (which Perry was told when he bought it).

They track down Jimmy Velvet, a lifelong friend of Elvis who verifies (by pointing out some sort of special marking) that it was indeed one of Elvis' pistols.

Velvet then proceeds to tell them that Elvis was actually carrying that particular revolver when he net Nixon at the Whitehouse!! And, he said, that Elvis was probably carrying more than just that one revolver at the time!!

Do not try that with your CCL :D

IIRC, my recruit class was about mid-way through rookie school when we were advised we would soon be issued our duty weapons. We were already sworn officers but NOT permitted to carry ANY gun whatsoever...period.

That was music to our collective ears and most of us immediately acquired some 158 ball ammo (the only ammo authorized) and dutifully toted 6 rounds of it in our POV's from that point on. It was a few days later when, at the end of class, we were directed to report to the property office where we were thereupon issued brand new SW M10's. We we told not to load on the premises...almost the entire class made it about 3 feet from the gate before we loaded up.

Forget what holster I had but it was a clip on IWB. The next morning I must admit I stopped at the 7-11 on the way ro school just to see what happened. Nothing, happily, and I have carried a gun 99.9% of all my days since then...that's 37 years, 79 days, and counting.

Ahhhhhh, the memories... :)

Be safe.

Sounds like maybe you had been doing it before you were legal!

No, I always made it a point to have the pistol visible when I was armed. Just had a wierd feeling to be CCW in the presence of law enforcement. This was very soon after the passing of the concealed carry law here.
