First trip with 629

Recoil is all relative.

My first .44 Mag was a blued 6-1/2" Model 29 back around 1974, and I thought it was a monster.

I had started 'smithing around then and had a Thompson Contender come in with misfire issues. The problem was the owner had installed the then-new Win .30-30 barrel and the mainspring wasn't strong enough for the harder rifle primers.

T/C ultimately came out with a stronger spring to correct this, but that wasn't available then so I had to do a slight mod to get it going and, of course, had to test-fire it to make sure it worked properly.

People scoff at the .30-30 but trust me, a mild rifle cartridge beats a hot handgun round every time!

Five rounds was enough to convince me that the T/C was reliable and that my .44 Mag wasn't that big a deal after all.

I am of a different type I guess . I shoot a 4" 29-10 on a very regular basis . I reload so I can shoot as mild or as wild as I want , from 44 spl. loads to EK's 44 magnum load of 22.0 / 2400 using his bullet .
Anyway I installed a set of std S&W magna's right after I bought it . Those grips are still perfect for me , after all these years and loads from mild to wild and I don't have to reposition my hand after each shot . I just don't like rubber grips , never have----never will . Regards, Paul

Yep, 240gr Mag's really grab your attention. However, the .44 Special is a very mild shooting load out of the N frame.

Since I got my 629 this month, the cost of factory ammo has really got me thinking that .44 might just end up being the caliber that pushes me into reloading for handguns. I've been saving brass from .45 acp, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, and now both .44 Magnum & Special. If I'm gonna start trying to save $$$ by rolling my own .44 - I might as well do .357 and .45 acp as well.

Gonna be able to shoot these much cheaper = more often.

Of course now I have to go through the initial expense of set up ... makes me wish I'd done it 20 years ago. *shrugs*

Congrats on your new 629. That looks like a 5" barrel on it to me. I have a 6 1/2" 629 Classic and a 5" 29 Classic and I find the 5" barrel gun to be a bit more "snappy" in recoil.

As for holding off on reloading until you've shot 1000 rounds or so, I would suggest you buy yourself some brass from Starline and start loading for yourself. That way you can save a little money over buying factory ammo and more importantly, tailor your ammo to your needs. You can load up some good shooting ammo at 800-1000 ft/sec and save yourself a bunch of recoil and help you get used to your new gun, then start powering them up from there.

BTW, I have put Culina round to square stocks on both my Classics. I find that they feel better in hand to me than the stock rubber grips and they look loads better.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM, AND CONGRATS ON YOUR NEW REVOLVER......

THIS IS SOUND ADVICE ON BOTH COUNTS.....

FWIW, FAMED LEO, CHAMPIONSHIP LEVEL SHOOTER, PROLIFIC GUN WRITER, AND SD TRAINER, MASSAD AYOOB, IS OF THE OPINION THAT FINGER GROOVED GRIPS ONLY FIT 10% OF THE SHOOTING PUBLIC. I AM NOT ONE OF THAT 10%. AS A RESULT, I SWAP ALL OF THOSE GOODYEARS OUT FOR AHRENDS SMOOTH TACTICAL CONVERSION GRIPS, IN TUNG OIL FINISHED MORADILLO WOOD......

10-4 on that. Got some brass on the way and need to pick up some dies for my single stage.

Eventually I'll set up another tool head for the 650, but not in a hurry.

You might as well get into casting as well. When I was really struggling to hit stuff with 44 mag I read an article about casting to get the price per round down. Put together a modest casting set up and then you'll pay nothing for bullets. But, be warned that will start another obsession.

Nice looking 629. A 6" dash 2 629 is next on my wish list.

Thought about casting, not really enough time in my schedule to justify it.

Been using Summers Enterprises bullets. GREAT pricing and very accurate in both 200 lswc and 230 rn for my 45s.

Got some regular hogue grips today. Much easier to reach the trigger. Also blasted some clp down in the guts, must have been dry in there because the double action smoothed right up.

ETA: already getting the desire for a 3" version. Probably end up with 2 more. I have this ocd problem with having to own 3 of everything I like.
