First year Highway Patrolman?

Thanks for the information, the gun is in good condition, some bluing loss but overall good shape considering its age.

We really need pictures, and posting in the aforementioned HP thread will get you lots of likes!

IMO guns with patina are far more interesting than safe queens. Do you know anything about the history of your gun?

Yep, definitely an early first year (1954) 5-screw 4" Highway Patrolman. It's too bad that the stocks are not numbered to the revolver because that does affect the value somewhat. However it's still a very sought after piece, and the 4" bbl. versions usually bring more than those with the 6" bbl. Mine is also a first year (and my birth year!), s/n S114481 ca. July/August 1954. You can usually see some finish wear on these old warhorses, but that's to be expected. Mine is in VG condition with the original stocks and box, but unfortunately it suffers from the often seen front sight base "rash". This was not caused by neglect, but by problems with the bluing salts used by S&W during this period. I hope that you plan to shoot your HP...they're a lot of fun! How about posting some pictures? Enjoy!

The model 28 has to be one of S&W's best ideas ever. A model 27 with a Satin finish for those that want to take their guns out and use them for a bargain price.
