I have a 629-3, 6.5", and plan to carry it when I'm out hunting or fishing alone. Had a bear encounter last year, unarmed, that spooked me a little, so I have been carrying a Rossi .357, but just got a killer deal on the Smith, so that's my go-to gun now. I need to be able to fly fish without hinderence, and usually use a fanny type pack for my flies etc on my right hip. Also need to be able to wear outside rain gear or winter coat, since it rains a bit here in the northwest, as well as gets damn cold during steelhead season, as well as having rain gear etc.. for hunting. Any thoughts?

Look at the Tanker or Doc Holiday holsters here:

El Paso Saddlery - Holsters

I've seen a pic of the Tanker holster somewhere else and it's worn outside of clothes.

Not recommending El Paso, just giving examples of styles to look for.

I have no experience with El Paso or these styles. so can't give any opinion...

Here's an interesting short article about tanker holsters:

Here's a couple of pics of tankers being worn:

Checkout Mernickle Holsters fishing rig, and also look at SimplyRugged leather both are similar, outdoor rigs for fishing and backpacking.

I hunted bear with an 8 3/8" handgun in mountainous areas needing both hands to get around sometimes. A vertical shoulder holster worked best for me and the others in the group.

I like the idea Simply rugged has, pancake holster for belt carry, add their harness to the holster and it does exactly what I want! Thanks for the info, guys, have to give them a jingle. Bob.
