Five Most Annoying Words for 2017; No Offense But I Disagree ...

These are just not that annoying to me.

Sometimes you just need to say "whatever" to end a meaningless conversation. (Just watch, some real wise guy will post that word in this thread! )

"Fake News" is probably hated most by the journalists who practice it on a daily basis.

"No offense, but ..." does seem a little like weasel words, but I use it sometimes when contradicting someone on the internet. What else could you say? "Not trying to start a fight but ..." ?

I'll bet the great minds of this Forum can come up with a better Five Most Annoying Words List.

The shoulder-shrugging reply "Whatever" continues to annoy Americans more than other words or phrases, but "fake news" is coming on strong.
The annual Marist College poll of most annoying words and phrases found "whatever" topping the list for the ninth straight year. It was the pick of one-third of poll respondents, who were given five choices.
The recent addition "fake news" was slightly ahead of "no offense, but" for second place, 23 percent to 20 percent. About one in 10 found "literally" to be most grating, as did a similar number for "you know what I mean."
The telephone survey of 1,074 adults conducted Nov. 6-9 has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

I've used the phrase "With all due respect".......... the problem face to face is managing to do it with a straight face and/or keeping utter contempt out of your voice when the previous speaker is an complete dolt.

One I cribbed from Jerry Pournelle is "As it happens/Actually, that's not the case".

I hated it decades ago when we had a pastor who constantly "shared" even though all he did was talk about stuff.

These days, people who "reach out" when all they do is contact somebody annoy me to no end. They probably reach out to the 911 operator when their house is on fire.

"Whatever" originated with the dim wit Valley Girls and has to be said in a certain way. Such as:

Yes, I recall second lieutenants through colonels using that prefix in their comments to me during my last six years in the 'Force. Their disagreement with what I'd said to generate that phrase never changed my mind. If some policy, trend or directive was feces I called it such!

"Say what you mean, and mean what you say" is a concept lost on most folks who use many of the annoying words and phrases posted here.

"It is what it is." , using the word "issue" instead of "problem this one has bugged me for years. politically correct is another one. One I haven't heard in awhile is "talk to the hand" at that point the person puts their hand up in your face palm towards you . I take that to mean " I can't back up my statement with facts or logical thinking so leave me alone".

Quit saying "African American". Its just stupid. I know a few white American citizens born in Africa. I know a lot more black Americans that have never been to Africa. Is a black guy that was born and raised in Africa and has never been to America an African American? Friend of mine refered to someone in Scotland as African American. Then finds out that nobody in the guys family has ever been outside of UK in about 200 years. Not African or American. That whole thing did not turn out too well. I thought it was pretty funny.

A friend taught me this one, and it goes deep if you really think about it.

Words have meaning.

Too often people toss out **** without thinking about what they are saying. It get worse when incorrect language is used in technical conversation. Not having a working grasp of what is really going on doesn't stop some people from being experts with great insight needing to be imparted on the little people.

Which brings us to : You don't know, what you don't know.
