I just picked up a Model 66 no-dash 4 inch with box and papers (no tools)for $230 out the door. It's almost pristine, and the serial number is 9K38XXX. I know that early Model 66's had a problem with binding with full house loads after they got hot, and that this was, I believe, traced to the gas ring. Anyone know if this can be fixed by a semi-skilled owner like me? (I can detail strip and reassemble the revolver with no problems and have replaced triggers and hammers in the past.) Oh, and any info on date of manufacture would be appreciated.

You should shoot the gun and see if it works. I'm not certain the problems you mention were widespread, so shooting might provide some insight into your particular gun.
Might not have a problem at all, won't know until you shoot it.

I have an early no-dash, as indicated by SS sights, and it binds up tighter than a drum after 2 shots with .357 of any variety....
I must send mine back.

Thanks, guys. I fired 200 rounds through it day before yesterday, 50 magnums and the rest .38 specials. I had no problems. Think I'll take a wait and see attitude on this one.

Just want to add that this forum is great. I've yet to post a question that didn't receive numerous helpful replies. Thanks to all.

FWIW, I have a friend who has a similar M66. Over the years, we have shot it a lot. My 19-3 has given me more problems than his 66 has given him. He takes lousy care of his guns (a perfect stainless steel man

) - rarely cleans them. I keep my 19-3 clean, and it is fine. Shoot 50-100 cast bullet loads through it and it is going to require a good cleaning, or you are on your way to wearing out the hand.

If your gun works fine, I wouldn't send it anywhere unless you see the problem for yourself.
