Fixing a Gen. 3 4013

I planned to not shoot it at all once it's out of holding. My fear is a runaway firing cycle.

My local smith said he is familiar with them and will take a look once it's out of holding. However I am still open to advice or assistance from everyone here. As I'm sure you may have more experience

I'd send it off straight away to Bill(forum member BMCM) for his treatment. Like URIT mentioned, the 4013 makes an awesome single stack lightweight 10mm platform and nobody does it better than Bill. Even if you're not inclined to go that route, he will straighten out any issues you have with it and get it running right.

I got a 'California' vibe out the OP before you confirmed you were from there for some reason, might be because I saw a 4013 on sale on Calguns a few days ago. $750 isn't exactly a great deal but it's on par in California, I've paid less but I've also paid more for 3rd gens here in CA. I used to have a 4013TSW which is built on the 6906 frame and takes 4006-style compact mags rather than the .45-frame 4013 which it looks like is what you have. I'll second sending your gun to BMCM, he knows his business and I actually have a gun with him right now, he's also probably very busy because we all send our guns to him though :p

Isn't that the truth. That one you saw on calguns was probably the one I grabbed. I was already in person with the guy when I noticed the issue but didn't make any big deal of it. It's in otherwise pretty good shape and I think once the issues are worked out it will be a shooter.

I'd be curious about the 10mm route, but I'd also be satisfied having it back to proper working order in its original configuration.

I've sent BMCM a private message and am waiting a reply. If everyone is swearing by his work I am sure I'll be in good hands. Truth be told, even if it takes a few months to work out I won't loose any sleep over it. I'd rather it done right than twice.

Unlike the rear main seal job I just paid for on my TJ Jeep…

Anyone you recommend to remedy this issue? I have no qualms with sending it out for the work. I just want to make sure I don't end up with a paperweight.

First of all, just to be clear, despite what some have written, you have the single stack magazine, 40 S&W chambered, compact handgun built on the 45 frame (sometimes known as the 'Large frame").

The confusion comes from the fact that S&W built two pistols with the same number, 4013.

The 4013, like yours as I wrote, was built on the large, 45 frame and was the first compact, 40 S&W model offered.

The second 4013, the 4013TSW, was built on the medium, double stack magazine frame. Not yours.

None of the major components (frame, slide, barrel) interchange.

Whatever is wrong, it is an easy repair, and if you lived near me, I would be glad to show you how to fix it.

Whoever you bring it to, make sure they understand the inner workings of the S&W metal framed, center fire, semi-auto pistols and can tell the difference between the model 4013 and the model 4013TSW.

The modification only involves the barrel and magazine along with a stronger recoil spring. If you could locate a spare barrel and mags to modify, changing back to original configuration is quick and easy.

It has the bobbed hammer, so I couldn't manipulate it by hand with it in the forward position.

It can still be checked: after verifying it's unloaded, & with a magazine installed, slowly squeeze on the trigger which will draw the hammer rearward slightly & clear the slide's enclosure for manipulation.

While maintaining a steady trigger pressure you can engage the top of the serrated hammer with your free hand's thumb & manually cock it back into the SA notch.

Here's the link to my related thread on converting a 4013 to shoot 10mm.
