Just had my daily talk with Mom and she reminded me it was Flag Day and I should put out my flag. Followed orders and thought I'd tell others here that my mom would like all y'all to hoist your flags! She's 81 and you should respect her wishes....:D

I would, but it is pouring rain.

What's rain got to do with it?

Mine stays on display, right out on my front porch.

Perhaps yours is "all-weather." Mine is not, making the heavy rain problematic.

Flag Day speech by Capt. Collins (Richard Crenna) from the 1966 movie The Sand Pebbles.
Those of you who've served will understand exactly the point he's making here:

Today we begin cruising to show the flag on Tungting Lake and the Hunan Rivers.
I want all honors rendered smartly.

At home in America, when today reaches them it will be Flag Day. For us who
wear the uniform every day is Flag Day.

It is said that there will be no more wars. We must pretend to believe that.
But when war comes, it is we who will take the first shock, and buy time with
our lives. It is we who keep the Faith...

We serve the Flag. The trade we all follow is the give and take of death.
It is for that purpose that the people of America maintain us. And anyone of
us who believes he has a job like any other, for which he draws a money wage,
is a thief of the food he eats, and a trespasser in the bunk in which he lies
down to sleep.

Mines out on ever occasion. I noticed that there were a total of 4 houses in my neighborhood flying the flag - thats out of 27 houses. :(

I am proudly flying both Old Glory and the Minnesota State Flag today on Flag Day. It is a beautiful day, and every time I glance at them flying in the breeze I feel proud of where I live. I also want to thank all who serve!

Flag

When I retired, the unit conducted a command retreat-so, in uniform, I saluted the flag at 1700 for the last time. Now I still occasionally go outside at 1700 and salute, albeit I'm a DA civilian. What a priviledge. There are so many people who have no idea-not a clue.
As an interesting note-the majority of the combat related medals have ribbons that are Red, White and Blue-The higher the award, the more blue in the ribbon-the MOH ribbon is a filed of stars! So the soldier receives a small part of the flag. An exception is the Navy Cross-with its Navy Blue Ribbon-Senior service, you know-and of course the Purple Heart-with George Washington on the medal.
And Happy Birthday to the United States Army
