Flip Flops!!!

Out of curiousity, what about the fad of men's leather sandals with white socks, black socks(knee high) or no socks at all? I have heard that some of those sandals can cost enough to buy a full box of ammo or even more.

Are western bolo ties acceptable instead of regular tie, when a tie is required?

Is a white dome line more acceptable than a cap or hat?

Not to rock the boat but really.

If a guy is sitting at the table next to you wearing flip flops what difference does it make? his feet are under the table not on yours. 99.99% of the time I couldn't tell you what kind of shoes my wife is wearing much less the guy at the table next to me.

I wear flip flops from time to time and have no problem wearing them out to eat at most chain type establishments. When you wear shoes for 12-14 hours a day its nice to be able to wear flip flops from time to time in the evenings.

To be honest I find more offense to the clothing some women wear that they really shouldn't. I have seen too many women that look like a 5lb sausage in a 3lb skin. That is right there in your face, you look up and you have to see the slobs rolls hanging out of her clothes, or nothing beats looking up and seeing half her ass crack because the pants are 3 sizes too small.

Much bigger fish to fry in the politicly correct dressing room than a man wearing flip flops fellas.

I'm an old guy(50) and I love wearing flip flops. I even wear them to church sometimes, as we have a very casual church. I also feel I dress apropriately for most occasions, and have plenty of nice, pressed, dress clothes and shined shoes as the situation dictates. It's the style right now and I'm glad, I hate wearing shoes and sweaty socks in the summertime, I do enough of that at work.

In summer around the house evenings or running errands or even some casual chain-type dining I'll wear a pair of high-end leather flip-flops or Tevas, especially after wearing steel-toed boots at a client plants all day. Ditto for if we're down south in the Carolinas or FL, or at the beach on vacation. Apparently I'm not too offensive; more than a few women have said, "nice feet" and seriously. My wife doens't gripe, either, and believe me, she'd be the first to do so. Sometime I'll just wear a Dexter or Bass boat mocassin without socks. But only at casual chain type restaurants where 90% of the clientele are dressed the same.

Otherwise, it's a polo or golf shirt and chinos or jeans, with boat mocs or casual slip-ons, usually from G H Bass or Ecco.

Usually when we go to a "nice" restaurant here locally, or to NYC for a weekend twice or three times a year for dinner and a Broadway show I'll wear a pair of Brooks Brothers chinos, and a Brooks Brothers navy blue blazer over a button-down shirt (with or without tie), turtleneck in winter. Sometimes a navy or black suit, with or without pinstripes. If I wear a coat over a button-down, I usually wear a tie. I'm kind of a "tie freak", and have lots to choose from. Diagonal stripes, rep ties, red or maroon "power" ties, regimental ties, you name it. I don't mind wearing a tie.

Dress shoes are either Florsheim, Johnston-Murphy, G H Bass, or Ecco as appropriate to "dress down" or "dress up." Yep, the "good stuff" costs more, but I have Brooks Brothers slacks, sport coats, shirts, and suits that are 15-20, even 25 years old and still look near-new.

Still fit, too.

I don't consider myself old (40), but I guess I am getting close enough. Although I don't have anything specifically against articles of clothing like flip-flops, I think they have their place. I recently observed a young man at a funeral with the common attire, flip-flops, tee shirt untucked and a pair of cargo shorts pulled halfway off his a**. I did roll my eyes in disgust. The point I want to make is that I do not believe that it is a lack of respect for themselves or others. I don't believe that these kids and adults were ever taught what is respectfull. When I was a kid, if I came out of the bedroom dressed like the village idiot I was slapped up side the head by my parents and made to change. I now have a wife that serves the same purpose. :)

I guess I'm one of those on the wrong side of the opinion & fashion fence here. I live in hellisly, hot & humid Florida. Here most of us consider T-shirt, shorts and flip-flops casual wear. Polo shirt, dockers and flip-flops are regarded as "dressy".

When I see someone in a tie, jacket and closed leather shoes, it's a sign that either "they ain't from around here" or they're going to a funeral.

+1 for flip flops

Howdy,
Hard enough to get me in pants at times.
Resort areas and other places that dont require a tie and jacket are subject (from me) to shorts, Kahala shirts and flip flops.
Thanks
57 year old Mike

I'm usually in flip flops during the summer if I'm not working or in the woods. When we get 90+ degree with high humidity summer days... most people are wearing "very dressed down" clothes. Now if I'm planning on going out just to eat... at a nice place I won't wear them.

I guess I'm one of those grouchy old men too. At the risk of being called a thread hijacker, I would like to express my disgust with guys who wear a hat (usually a ball cap) while eating in a restaurant.

I would go over to Mom and Dad's on a Saturday for lunch (like a ham sandwich and chips) and sit down at the table w/ my ball cap on. Dad would give me that funny look and I would take the hat off. We were taught gentlemen don't wear hats at the table and Dad expected that of us.

Now if I am in a McDonald's or similar? The hat stays on usually. Anything better and the hat comes off. To each their own tho...

As far as flip-flops. I don't flip, I don't flop, and I definitely don't flip-flop. But I could care less what other people wear...

My semi-retirement job is at Wally World. I see every single one of everything everybody has mentioned many times a day. I keep my comments to myself, but barely....:D

I have got to learn not to read this forum while eating lunch. Last week it was the ear hair thread and now this. :)

a long line of ugly severely overweight women who have stuffed themselves into a clingy terry cloth garment three sizes too small

in this area at least, the white, lumpy, bump covered flesh is displayed frequently.

I think it makes a difference if it's a guy or a gal... rubber flip-flops vs. leather sandals... nice restuarant or fast food chain... and the part of the country you're from.

I live in a "resort town" and see lots of summer wear this time of year. In the summer I usually wear leather sandal birkenstocks, especially if I'm going to be on my feet a lot. They're cooler and very comfortable.

I don't like flip-flops (rubber or plastic) unless I'm at the beach, pool or hot tub, but I do like leather sandals (mine are Tevas).
Plus, I figure if they were good enough for JC, they are good enough for me.:)

As a new resident of FLA, I am amazed at the attire women wear to church on Sunday. Some look like they just stopped on the way to the beach. Not just flip-flops, but low cut tops, and shorts which are very short indeed. It is all hanging out - or is the real purpose to shock the other parishoners and say "look at me". No respect at all. We should have more humility when in the house of God.

I think it's on a par with women who appear in public with their hair in curlers barely covered by a scarf. One thing we seem to be losing is a sense of decorum and of "time and place". Flip flops-OK at the beach, the pool, your front or back yard or among real familiars,
but in public-NOT! I think there's a time and a place for sandals-one acquaintance said
wearing sandals one summer let him clear up some sort of fungus on his feet. (Honest)
The Army got me in the habit of removing my hat-uncovering- as soon as I go indoors (unless I am Under Arms, harhar!). Also I recall in my youth being told if you wear your hat indoors you'll go bald.
I went to a friend's church-Presbyterian-last Sunday. It was Dress Down Sunday, or so it seemed. He was in shorts with shirttails out-and he's the minister!

I guess I'll not fit in here.....

Here I sit, wearing cut off jeans, $75 Chaco flip flops (with socks!) drinking a nice glass of white wine while bar-b-que-ing a nice slab of Copper River Salmon. Kinda hard to get excited about all the comotion of wearing flip flops...... Oh well, I at least cycle between 4 different pair, you know - gotta match the "shoes" to the attire - colors and all.....
Times are a changing, I figure it helps to match the environment you are in. One thing for sure, when in Hawaii, I drop the socks and try to "fit in" a bit better.

I'm a jeeter at heart, so don't pick on me.

:)

well times are changing but for the worst, respect and morels have died out so naturally so will everything common sense related

I can not stand anyone wearing flip flops to a restaurant.
My wife and I were walking through the mall last weekend as she needed a dress to wear to a wedding coming up July 4th on a beach on Lake Michigan. Footwear came up and I do not want to wear my nice leather dress shoes out in the sand. She knows how I feel about flip flops and brought them up jokingly, just as we were walking past some spoiled looking jock types (wearing them flip flops). Of coarse I felt the need to exclaim loudly enough "real men don't wear flip flops, ever". Got some dirty looks but nothing came of it.
