I am interesting in putting a set of Magpul flip-up sights on my 15-22 along with some optics, either a small scope or red dot. I prefer to have the ability to use BOTH the open sights as well as the optics WITHOUT removing the optics. Would a set of see-thru scope rings be high enough to mount a red dot or scope and still allow for the open sights to work? Or would a riser be needed?

What are your opinions of the Magpul flip-up sights? Are they a good replacement for the factory sights on the rifle?

Many thanks in advance for your thoughts!

The idea of being able to use open sights and optics is in case the optics fail. My dad always argued for it. As a former ranger/marksman, he never liked having to sacrifice open sights for optics.

That is why Im interested in the best way to go about having both that would be completely functional, as in using the scope for long range and being able to drop down the open sights for short range.

I'm sort of a cheap @$$ mostly because I have to be. I use a set of 45* irons mounted with my Simmons scope. Works pretty good for what I want. Long range for the scope and the irons for plinking at the short range tin cans. Scope was free. About $25 for the irons.

45 degree mounts for the open sights probably your best bet for using a magnified scope and irons.

Had to take the open sights off when I mounted UTG 3x9 Bug Buster. Never thought of using 45 degree mounts. That's a good idea though

If you are going to run irons and a RD (non magnified) better to run them inline. I prefer an absolute co-witness. Though in reality my fold down sights are not. The RD is zeroed at 50 yards and my BUIS are at 100. Reason is when at matches for the up close stuff, my sight over bore is less using the RD for up close and personal targets. When I have a long range targets above 100 my hold over is less.
