A lot of forum members mention Flitz as a polishing agent when dealing with older nickel plated guns, but in researching the Flitz products there are several choices. Which one is best to use on old rusty and peeling nickel Smiths? Do you use liquid or paste?

If the nickel is peeling it's already too late to save it at those spots.

There's rust cancer under it. Polish it back to where it's no longer peeling and then you know you got all the rust. The polish will blend in the nickel plating that remains on the clean (rust free) metal underneath.

You can speed up the process with 2000 grit wet-or-dry sandpaper wrapped around a small hard flat surface to blend the nickel/metal surface and keep it flat. The polish will then remove the very fine sand paper marks.
