Just bought a 4-digit serial number, 1880 vintage, .32 DA, 2nd model. It is sporting a pair of floral/turkey grips. This is my first experience with them. Do they look original or are they just a pair of modern "turkeys"? I cannot see a serial number penciled on the inside of either grip.

I didn't buy the gun because of the grips, so I won't be too upset if they are knock-offs. I just like old things ... which is, I tell my wife, why I like her so much.

Thanks for the help.

PS: Just noticed the first photo is a bit blurry. Sorry about that.

I would be almost certain that those stocks are original. Looking at the style of escutcheons and screw, plus the patina formed on the metal, they look original to me. Nice find, but where is the 32 DA?

I knew somebody was going to ask that. :)

She's not the prettiest thing in the world, but she is now my oldest. It's starting to get dark, so hard to take a decent photo, but here she is in all her worn glory.

Thanks for the reply. And thanks, Don, for this cool old gun!

I owned that gun about twenty years. I bought it from a dealer I had be buying from ever since I started collection. He got it from a man in his 90's, that had a large collection of antique Smith & Wessons.
Ed what makes you say it "probably didn't come on the gun".

Well I did buy one because of the grips. It looked good in the pictures (other than the chopped barrel... 1 3/8" serial #3113) and the price was right at $100.00.
The gun turned out to be a total disaster, but the grips were nice, so I'm happy. They now grace another 2nd Model, albeit with a higher serial number. (And I have a parts gun in the junk bin.)
