flu shot, y or n?

Ive had the shot some years and probably skip it most of the time.I do know that the years Ive had it,I haven't had the flu.I usually get away with skipping it.

I get the flu shot every year. Not skeered of a little needle and now I don't get the flu. I have a baby girl who was born 3.5 months premature and she got the shot too..
With her lungs, the flu could kill her.

I got 'em for years and years with no problems, and then in 2010, 2011, 2012 promptly got sick after each annual shot. So I asked my doc in 2013 if he thought I should continue to take 'em. He looked at me incredulously and said, "Of course not! They make you sick!"

So I wash my hands a lot, use that alcohol on my hands, too, and try to stay away from crowds. So far, so good.

Any danger of separating out the reactions to the old style of shots, reactions to the new shots, and the times the flu vaccine failed due to bad guesses? Dollars to doughnuts 75% or more of those who "got sick after the shot" had a reaction, NOT the flu.

If your young and can deal with the flu. But when your 60 you don't want to get sick. I been getting the shot for the last ten years and never got sick. I hate to vomit!!!!!!

I get the flu shot every year and have since they have been common.

I'm sure folks can give anecdotal stories of their own good and bad experiences with them... but I'll go with the statistics and possible risk. This is the same reason I put on my auto seat belt when I hit the road.

I find it funny that so many folks are willing to take certain risks.. but would never leave home without their carry piece.

I always thought I was a tough *** & didn't need a flu shot. Until I got the flu & I though I was going to die! I was 45 then & was sick for 3 weeks. That was 15 years ago & I haven't missed a flu shot since! Or had the flu again. I learned the hard way!!!!

Had the flu once... 1986. Didn't really know I was sick. Church members found me lying across my desk during Sunday School. I don't remember them carrying me to the parsonage. It was a few days before I was up again.

Have not and do not take the flu shot. Just never gave it any thought. Now I'm not 31 years old... now 58 years old. May have to think about it. Maybe. With all the people coming into this country from odd ball places and the high mobility of our population as people move seeking to find employment, etc., there is probably more risk. JMHO. Sincerely. brucev.

You survived.

Flu KILLS people. It's not just bad cold.

It's worth the minor reaction you may have to the shot to be protected from this deadly infection. You CAN'T get the flu from a flu shot.

When the flu shot protects you against flu infection, it is keeping your body from becoming susceptible to other diseases due to being weak from fighting the flu virus. When your immune system is being strained to the maximum, you can contract other diseases much easier than when it is not. Having mulitple infections at the same time is just stupid. Why would you even take the chance?

Boy you sure can see a lot of nonsense spouted in a thread like this. Some of you folks really need to spend some time talking to an Immunologist instead of repeating nonsense heard in a Bar.

I failed to get a flu shot a few years back when that nasty H1N1 variant was going around. Thank heavens for Taimiflu because I have NEVER EVER gotten so sick so quickly. The Boyfriend of the receptionist who passed the flu on to me ended up in the U of M Hospital on ECHMO for two solid weeks and at one point his lungs were so full of fluid they couldn't be seen on an X Ray. He also came out of the hospital with partial paralysis in one arm due to needing to be restrained because of extreme delirium and a total bill in excess of $750,000. Yeah, 3/4 of a million bucks to save him from the Flu and to it's credit the U of M forgave all charges. I may be an Ohio State grad but nobody better say something bad about the U of M in my earshot.

Today I make sure that I get the Flu Shot every year without fail and, knock on wood, I have not yet gotten sick with the flu that is going around in spite of this years vaccine being a poor match. BTW, at work right now I'm also washing my hands about once per hour because that is probably the most effective way to keep unexposed.

Let me be really clear, the Flu can be LETHAL, it's not always a couple of days in bed running a fever. Today many Historians believe that WWI ended not because of Armistice, it actually ended because so many people were being killed by the Spanish Flu. BTW, the 1918 Spanish Flu was an H1N1 variant and IIRC it killed something like 18 million people world wide and a large proportion of those killed were between 18 and 30 years of age. For some reason not fully understood H1N1 flu variants are particularly nasty and often lethal. So, don't think that Youth will protect you, get that shot.

Never used to get it but now I'm older and have the last few years. I figure it won't hurt and might have helped too.
My wife works in a hospital so brings home lots of germs I'm sure. We wash our hands regularly, use hand sanitizer and change hand towel daily. Wife got her shot and has felt a little fluish but not too serious. I used to work among many people and picked up things too. I don't miss getting the flu since I started getting the shots.

That is correct...that particular strain was most deadly to those in the population that were the strongest and otherwise healthiest, young adults in their late teens and early twenties. Your own body kills you trying to fight it. Something called a "cytokine storm."

Never had one, don't plan to. Last time I had a flue was probably mid 90s. Just had one last week. Had a temperature for a day and a half and done, so no big deal

Being a doctor's son, I had the shot every year till about five or six years ago, when I stopped getting them due to concerns about the additives. My frequency of getting the flu is no different now than before.

I don't think that the flu is particularly amenable to elimination via vaccination, due to its constant variability.

Best approach for the flu is to frequently sanitize your hands, keep your hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth, and stay away from those with the flu. That and a proper diet and vitamin supplementation. If someone coughs in your direction, close your mouth and hold your breath till you've cleared the area. The flu vaccine likely causes more harm than good.
