Would anybody here use the 5.7 as a defensive load? I mean, its only 28 grains, but it fires at 2300 fps.

Just curious if anybody has real world experience with the 5.7..........

I'd hate to rely on it, even if I could find the ammo. I think it's too unproven.

The commercially available version seems to me to be about like a 22 Hornet. Thus, it is better than nothing, but I do not see lots of folks using 22 Hornets for defense, at least if there is a choice of something else.

The LE/Military version of the round may have additional benefits, such as good penetration against vests, but that round is irrelevant as it is, for the most part, difficult to get.

Heck yes I would. Wish I could afford one. Pin point accurate and with the right ammo the weapon really rips. No recoil. Guy at the range had one and deadly accurate. Double, triple tap as fast as you can. If you have lots of $$ get the rifle for a well coordinated combo.
Do not think I would carry it as the bullets travel so far or use it in a Apartment or you have other family sleeping on the other side of the house.
Actually all things considered the ammo is "cheap" and has not changed much in price. Last I saw it was still around $20 per 50.

It's only Wikipedia(may or may not be correct) but gives some good info

Not a chance.

Unless you've got the armor piercing loads and need to shoot somebody through a helmet, it's just a VERY expensive way to shoot rats at the dump.

The wife loves to shoot the PS90, the FiveSeven and the 5.7 upper on the AR. I also enjoy shooting them. We've got two PS90s, three FiveSevens and two AR uppers. They're all fun to shoot. I carry the FiveSeven all the time with the 30 round mag. Most haters don't own one and are experts because they read something.

"Something" written by Dr. Fackler. But what does HE know...?

Commercial ammo from FN won't penetrate vests, one variant would go through some lower threat level vests by virtue of velocity, but that one is no longer sold. One can buy special loadings from other companies that do better than FN's ammo, runs faster etc. I failed to trade into one of the 5.7 pistols a few months ago, got a Sig 556 instead.

FN keeps their AP stuff in a special bonded warehouse and only releases it for LE/Mil agency purchase orders. However other companies make rounds that still have good AP properties by virtue of velocity/bullet construction of a non regulated nature. In short it works like AP, but becuase of how it works, the ATF doesn't restrict it as AP handgun ammo.

However, even the AP rounds will only penetrate soft body armor. Any sort of rifle plate defeats it. It also has limited tissue penetration, perhaps too limited, once it is through the armor.

Welcome to EliteAmmunition.com is the source for most of the better/hotter/more interesting loads.

I wouldn't bother with an AR upper so chambered personally, since I don't get the point (why wouldn't I just use 5.56mm?), but I'd be willing to experiment with one of the pistols.

But in general, the given niche is shooting through soft armor and rifles still do a better job for that.

He knows that he wouldn't want to stand in front of someone shooting a 5.7 cartridge.

Find me someone who wants to stand in front of someone shooting an RWS .177 pellet rifle....

Dangerous and optimum are two different things.

I'm neither an advocate nor a disbeliever in the 5.7mm.

Plenty of ss192 out there for sale still. As for PD, I will use whatever I can get my hands on quickly or my own hands and feet. The rounds lack shock and knock down power, but will ruin an attacker's day or night quickly. To each his own.

A friend got me interested in these. First the 5N7 and then the PS90. Kind of expensive.. I am going to put lasers on both of them. I can't get "down" on the PS90 and the sight looks canted. 50 rounds is impressive even if it is a 22 Hornet-level bullet. I hope to start reloading and then things might get interesting. Too bad they don't make a 22 "Grand Slam" with a tungsten insert.

"Total Recall" has a gun battle that looked like it was 5.7 action, but that is the movies of course

What caliber firearm WOULD he want to be shot with?

The real question is, "Would he willingly trust his life to a 5.7mm firearm in a gunfight?"

The answer is "no".

The 5.7, in my opinion, is an answer to a question nobody asked. First, in energy, it's only about equal to the .22 Win Mag rimfire round. Secondly, the brass doesn't last very long - it's subject to splits after just a few reloadings. Why not just buy a .22 mag? The ammo is cheaper, you don't have to reload, and the performance is equivalent. Its only joy is in those really-hi-cap FN guns with the mag that lays flat on top of the receiver. With one of those, you have a really expensive plinker. I can think of better things to do with that kind of money - like buying classic S&W revolvers!

It's falls right in there with the .22 WMR, 5mm Remington Mag, .22 Hornet and .218 Bee.

It's only saving grace is that it seems to be a bit easier to reload than the above cartridges, and of course is rimless. It shoots fairly well in my T/C Contender, but no better or worse than the .22 Hornet for accuracy. Accuracy seems to be worse in the 5.7 with factory ammunition.

Edit: I don't own a FN manufacture firearm in that caliber, they look too overpriced for what they are for my taste- just the T/C.
I might get one of those Taurus revolvers when they hit the market in this caliber, just to play with.

Just remember, it's only stupid when something doesn't sell. Clearly, FN thought they could sell a number of these pieces to the general public as a "novelty" piece- and they have for a time. It really appeals to the "tacticool" crowd which is fine with me. I just march to the beat of a different drummer. Heck, I'm very glad everyone don't collect and buy the same stuff that I do! Actually, I wish fewer people liked the same stuff I do- it'd be cheaper.

Actually, it's an answer to a question NATO asked, which pretty much guarantees that both question and answer are STUPID.

If you're a cook, personnel clerk or truck driver, who gets minimal marksmanship training, AND you need to shoot people in the head through a steel pot, it's sheer GENIUS.

Otherwise it's as useless as the Dutch Army.

I had a 5.7 and carried it happily. With a 20 round mag full in the gun and another 20 round mag on the hip I felt quite well armed.

As was already mentioned, the 5.7x28 is a close approximation of the .22 Win Mag. It is also one of the few calibers that has not increased in the price of ammunition. When I bought mine three years ago I was paying $25 for a box of 50. Now it is in the $20 range in my area.

The only reason I sold it was because I have gone exclusively to revolvers chambered in .357 Magnum and .44 Special. No more bottom feeders for me.
