My 1st posting on this forum,and I have a question.I am NOT the most knowledge person about S&W auto,I currently own a Model 39-2 in Nickel,really like weapon,but I have always wanted a 45acp,I have found a 645 in really nice shape,but its not local so seeing it in person would be hard. Its being sold for $500.00 with 2 mag's,Right side holster(I'm left handed) and its been modified to take a 4506 wrap around grip. Is this a good price and are they a good running pistol in general? My 39 eats just about anything I feed it and I hope the .45acp are the same.Thanks for taking the time to respond and for the help.Clint

The 645 is an excellent 45. Bet your life reliable, durable and looks good doing all that.
$500 for a 645 in good condition with two mags is a fair deal for a superb pistol, IMO.
The only thing in your post that gives me pause is where you say "its been modified to take a 4506 wrap around grip."
That would require a significant modification, IMO. I don't know that the modification could be done without comprimising the structural integrity of the 645's frame. Others know much more than I here, and hopefully they will be along to welcome you and opine.
I'm thinking that perhaps what you are looking at is one of the transitional 645's that has the 4506 improvements but still has the 645 model number. If so, then $500 is a much better deal! If it is a 6450, even better!!

It is hard to say what it is worth without seeing the modification, but otherwise, if it is in good condition $500 wouldn't be a bad deal.
You can always offer less.
I would want to see a lot of pics of the modification first.
If the gun looks butchered without the grip, I would keep looking.

Grip issue 645
The fellow selling it says he bought this way(with wrap around grips) But I have only seen 4506 with that type.If the factory made 645's like that,I have learned something new today!! At the risk of driving the price up,the firearm is listed on GunBroker.Thanks for your help.Clint

I just looked at it. It appears to be a transitional model 645. Dovetailed front sight, later 4506 style decocker without the screw. Wrap around grip would be consistant with those other mods.
Anyone got the SCSW handy and can date TBU53XX??

Date of Manufacture - 1988 that is the closest I can get with the catalog.
I had a 645 back in 1989 with a TAV serial number. Traded for my 4506 and really like the improvements made with the 3rd generation pistols.
The 645 was a great gun and wish I had it back.

My 645 ser # starts with TBA and according to S&W it was made in 1989. Don't know of that helps or not but e-mail S&W through their web page via "contact us" and ask them...that's what I did.

I have one of the transitional Model 645 pistols I bought new in September, 1988. TBR95xx. Basically a Third Generation (M-4506) slide on a Second Generation (M-645) frame. They came in a variety of combinations as S&W was busy using up batches of M-645 parts while phasing in the M-4506.
The M-645 wasn't made for very long, about 2-1/2 years. I bought my first one out of the first batch to hit town in January, 1986, TAK21xx.
Good, solid pistols that make efficient cudgels if you run out of ammo. Holding one in your hands provides a very "gunny" feeling. One of the most reliable semiautos S&W ever made.

Buf I also have a TAK made in 1986, you pick the gun up and you fall in Love. Quality and ruggedness built all the way through. It feels in you're hand like no other pistol. Just Great
