For All You Amature Orthopaedic Docs.

Plus I saw an episode of "House" one time where some gal at the South Pole was throwing clots and they couldn't figure out what was causing it until the last few minutes of the show when they found out that she had a broken toe and the boyfriend with her set the toe using long distance instructions from the doctors and she lived. SO according to te TV it IS a life threatening situation if you start throwing clots from the bone marrow.

Hey, I saw the same episode, and that's the first thing I thought of when I read your post. Get it checked out by a professional, before you start leaking bone marrow into your blood stream and wind up dead. How much can it cost, anyway?

Charlie,

Let's jest say if and when that may have happened to me.......

Straightened 'er up and taped it best I could and
what with being 50 mile from the trail-head, not to mention a hundred mile drive from the nearest medic.

The key to all this is the correct pain relief....After a half quart of shine it'll feel better.

By the time ya finish the quart....You'll get up, stagger, fall and break another, Jest for the hell of it! ;):D

I have broken the middle toe on my left foot 4 times. Only saw a Dr once. Twice, I taped it myself.

About 5 years ago, I managed to break BOTH my ankles on a hunting trip. Art first we thought only the one was broken and the other was ligament damage. Finally opted for ligament surgery and the found the bone was cracked (two years later!). The x-rays showed the 4 previous breaks in the toe.

Now, I did tape the toe myself for various reasons: The first time, I was 18 and no medical. The second time, I was in the Army and did see a Dr. The third time, I was fishing in a (very) small village in Mexico and nearest hospital was 2-3 hours by taxi. Fourth time, I stubbed it on stairs while traveling. No Dr.

So, now I'm 63 and hurt almost every morning. Since the surgery, my ankles are almost back to normal and I hope to get back into elk hunting next year. Other injuries have produced bone spurs, some from not having them looked at. I can predict rain better than the weather babe.

My bro went hunting in Africa. Flew coach (or whatever) came back with a blood clot and spent 6 weeks in the hospital; just from sitting for a long flight. When I had my ankles broke, my Dr had a hissy went I flew to D.C. for some meetings-was afraid I'd get a clot. Told him I'd stepped up my aspirin and that calmed him down.

Short answer: Don't be a baby! . Unless you want a blood clot in your lungs, or your brain (I grow vegetables, I don't want to be one!): Go to the Dr. I regret not doing so over the years.

Add one to the check it out group. The important thing you need to find out via x-ray is if A] it's a fracture, and B] if it's displaced.

If displaced, you'll need to have the ortho guy set it. Then, whether displaced or not, it'll be taped off, you'll probably be given a special shoe to wear for a while, some crutches to keep you off it, and some pain meds.

They'll tell you to rest, ice and elevate it too, whenever you can.

If you ignore it, and it heals ok, but is deformed, you may find your shoes don't fit as well as they used to.:)

Concur 100%. I couldn't have said it better, so I won't try. Please go and seek proper medical attention for this NOW. even a Doc-in-a-Box (24hr. Minor Emergency Clinic) would be better than doing nothing but asking your Forum brothers and sisters for advice.

Best of luck,

Dave

I've got a big toe I broke a long time ago and just let it heal. That sucker is arthritic now and can be a real pain hiking and snowshoeing.

Get it checked out. I wish I had some things fixed back when and now I'm paying for it.

Mobility is important, Think about it.

Sure don't want it to be the final chapter in your book. :(

Another word of advice. Always have a pair of shoes to slip into when you get out of bed. (I have some old thin sole boat shoes that work well and fit like slippers)

I could't count how many times this has saved me from doing the same thing as you.

Big plus, They are handy for the occasional palmetto bug or spider. That's unless they're IN your shoe.

You can have high dollar tape, and maybe a little bondo to fill the crack, but you are not going to know how bad until you get it checked.

My wife broke a little toe a few years ago, it was taped to the next bigger little piggie and healed OK. Last fall she broke the other little toe, She is a medical professional, RN, it was hurting real bad so she thought it would be a good time to set it while laying on the floor cry'n and cussin. Called me and went to get xray's. The DOC told her she did a fine set job, taped it and home she hobbled.

We went deer hunting in 2 states without any issues. This spring it started hurting, real bad and she started limping, now her hips and back hurt. It's getting harder to walk. She went back to an ortho Doc and found out shje has a crushed joint, cartiledge is smashed and she was told it would not get better. They put a pin in it a week ago today. She is now limping better without pain.

If it was me, I think I'd go get it checked.

Sorry that happened to you. Yeah, get it checked out. Then do like me and get some night lights. I have always used them to provide a little soft light around my home at night.

Alcohol not good pain relief

One night I heard a car race by. I wondered if it was my hot rod grandson. I rushed into my wife’s dark sewing room to peek out the blinds in the dark. She had moved her sewing machine to another spot on the floor. My right big toe crashed into it with much pain and verbal. Short story is that I lost my toenail and almost became an alcoholic.

Do not do the alcohol thing. A friend was alcoholic and his wife decided it was killing him. So she decided to will herself to die with him. He gave up the alcohol cold turkey. She got better, but he suddenly started having strokes because his blood was suddenly so much thicker.

Get a college education in psychology before becoming an alcoholic.
