For an inside the home

defense handgun which do you prefer, a revolver or a semi automatic?

Preference should be based exclusively on what handgun a person shoots best with, irrespective of platform.

And let's not forget that a handgun is most effectively used to get to a long gun. My HD choice is any of several .38/.357 revolvers, which lead the way to a Mossberg 930.

Good post. The first choice should be a long gun. Most "experts" agree that we should not venture out and search your home. Assuming you're in bed sleeping, wait for them to come to you. Otherwise a pistol close by is ideal whether it be a semi or revolver. Pick the one you shoot best.

Semi and the caliber just depends on which room of the house I am in.

Glock 17 with Streamlight white light.

However an AR-15 with Aimpoint T-1 and white light and M193 is my first choice.
2nd choice is an 870 with tritium bead, white light and 00.

fnx9 (18 rounds fully loaded) is usually what sits next to the bed. My revolver is usually on my person while wondering around the house. And once ammo comes a 30-06 would come into play if had time to get to it.

who can argue with 17+1 capacity for home defense? (with 2 extra mags in the nightstand)

I use my larger revolvers that I can't carry for home defense. But the first thing I grab is my Mossberg 500 with the attached light. You have to have a flashlight.

This could be terrible advice in some situations. In my case, shooting toward the bedroom door through which an intruder would have to enter places my daughter's room in the line of fire. Likewise, a gun fight with an armed intruder in the bedroom would endanger my wife. So, my strategy in the event of a break-in is to take the fight to the intruder, and not to let him/them anywhere near my family.

The defensive strategy is best if you can be in between the intruder and your loved ones. Obviously if you have children across the house parents are not likely to sit in their room waiting for police to show up.

My place is the top of the stairs. If I miss the bullets are going into the ground. Not the neighbors house. And if your coming up the stairs your not there to steal, your there for something else.
