If you are planning a Las Vegas vacation you may want to choose another state. Nevada no longer honors the Utah permit because they have added a qualification requirement to their required training and Utah has not.

"Utah concealed carry permits now restricted in Nevada "

NEVADA -- Big changes to gun laws in nearby Nevada may change how some Utahns travel through there.
Nevada is recognizing concealed carry permits from states like West Virginia and Ohio, but not Utah anymore.
Utah concealed carry instructor Steven Beckstead explained, "Utah does not require that you fire and qualify with the gun you're going to carry. Nevada now does."
He says Utahns can still have the gun in their car but not on their person in Nevada.
"Who knows when you're going to need it. It might be in the car, but most likely it's going to be out of the car," Beckstead said.
Other gun rights advocates say they're disappointed with this change, and many Utahns travel to or through Nevada on vacation. "

I don't understand this. It's not as if there have been a whole lot of killings resulting from ill-trained permit holders. As a Utah permit holder (and a fan of the Alaska & Vermont systems), I view this new requirement as just another infringement.

Nevada has dumped FLORIDA and UTAH, which just happened to be the only two states on their list that sold non-resident licenses.
Hmmmm??

Any even larger mystery to me is why they don't recognize Oklahoma, which meets all of their stated requirements.........we are identical to MO, which they recognize.

Do you think there are some politics involved?

Since this is so, if you would like Nevada to recognize OK permit, please ask OK authorities to get in touch with the Nevada DPS people. My understanding is that when Nevada tried to get info some states did not respond. That may be why OK was not put on the list.

I live in utah and have the permit. I ride quad in the boonies a lot. Yesterday I might have broke the law? The wife and I were checking out some mines square on the nevada/utah border. Some on each side the border in a very remote area. You cant get within 10 miles of the mines without a 4 WD or horse. My practice is to wear my gun under a untucked shirt. I could open carry also but dont like to advertise. So I always figuered I am covered either way. Yesterday on the way home we stopped to our girl friends resturant where I am well known. I had to go to the can. I also wear suspenders under my shirt and have to take the shirt off for serious business. A guy kept banging on the door! I let him in but didnt have my shirt on yet. He was a old guy from california and I belive he thought he was in the old west for sure!

Ummm. Why would you leave Utah to go toward Kali? Nevada has laws that are getting nearly as bad. I guess KY will soon be off the list, too. We require live fire, but not necessarily with the gun we're carrying. As I recall my Utah permit just required me to show familiarity with the gun. If you only handled or displayed competency with a revolver, it was what you could carry. If you were competent with a semi-auto, you could carry either.

That was an interesting part of the course. It may have changed some since I took it about 13 years ago. We were led into a partitioned off section of the room. One by one. There was a revolver (and off brand, Colt) and a 1911 on the table with a pile of snap caps in the appropriate calibers. We had to load and unload each, and make them safe. Wow, that one was hard (the cylinder release on the colt was backward.... :) ).. We didn't even have to field strip the 1911. I asked the guy watching if I needed to do that, and he got a disgusted look on his face. Said we'd flunk half the class.

Then he went on to say you'd be surprised at what you can tell about a persons shooting experience and how safe they're going to be, just by watching them. He said he could guess pretty well how people would score on a target, too.

Then I came home and took our course right after that. One of the things I was watching was the other people. How they handled their guns, what guns they brought along, and then finally how well/poorly they shot. The guy out at the Salt Palace was spot on.

Dick, I did my career in california. I retired and moved here to utah 4 1/2 years ago. Took the course, probley shouldnt say this, but was dissapointed. The course involved NO live fire! Really, it was easier than what you said. It was nothing more than listening to a 4 hour philibuster! But then, I had to qualify on my job for 35 years in calif. California is far more strict and involved range time for even a guard. Here, if you have a clean record and a pluse, sleep through the 4 hours, you are good to go! On the political side I approve. As a old gun nut and gun toter on my past jobs, I dont think they go far enough.

Had to qualify for my NE permit but have to admit it wasnt to much of a challange for all but a few had trouble and can understand their concern.
People wont practice even for hunting let alone in a high stess ordeal like that.
Dont get me wrong I think it really sucks bad and plan on complaining as soon as I find the right person.http://www.nvrepository.state.nv.us/ccw_changes.shtml
At least they recongnise some of the state permits
