Predictably, NYT are morons on this issue. Another "common sense" demand that would do nothing to prevent the tragedies that compel individuals and institutions to call for this kind of feel good non-solution.

I agree with your sentiments 100% - right up to the last 3 words. Life in prison is too mild a punishment for premeditated murder IMO. I'll stop there lest I get too political and get dinged for it.
