Forward Bolt Assist

The guys that determined the specs for our military rifles were obviously idiots because they included a forward assist and dust cover. Those features aren't needed, some guys on the internet that shoot the M&P Sport said so.

If the round doesn't chamber, why jam it in there even tighter? If the gun goes click and the bolts not fully in battery, eject that round and chamber the next. 16's have mighty poor manual extraction, the charging handle is about worthless to clear a stuck cartridge.

Which guys would you be referring to? The man who originally designed the rifle, who did not include those features in his design? Or would it be the guys that procured the rifle for the USAF Security Forces, who also did not request those features. Or maybe it was the guys from the Navy, who procured the rifle after the USAF, again not requesting those features. Oh, you must be talking about the Army, who being the last service to adopt the rifle requiring the design change...

How about the newer training courses and techniques that do not teach the use of the forward assist? There are many people who do not advocate the use of the forward assist, not just some guys on the internet who shoot the Sport.

My two Noveske Thunder Ranch Model AR's don't have forward bolt assists.

The thinking is they just make a bad situation worse.
I agree. Why cram a stuck round further and harder into the chamber.
Clear the Malf and move on to the next round for the win.

Noveske....Thunder Ranch....seems like those organizations know a thing or two about the AR-15.

I bet those are sweet rifles Crofoot!

I looked at one of those Colts just a couple of days ago at a friends gun store.
I liked the way it was set up except for one thing, it does not have a Dust Cover.
I am a big believer in keeping the dust cover closed at all times as it keeps dust/sand, etc out of the upper, and off of the bolt carrier.

I used some sort of AR15/M16 as a work gun for over 23 years, and I shot one at several schools in several states here in the USA. I never used a foward assist, I could "get buy" with out one for sure.

Early on in the M16 development there were several times where the rifle would fire when loading as the bolt was closed.
The primers were made a little harder, and the firing pin was made lighter, and it corrected the problem.

However we used commercial ammo on the Job, so most of the time, if not under duress, I would load the barrel by hand, and ease the bolt foward, as I was many times in places where I did not want the drama associated with a round going off. I could easially push the bolt carrier totally closed with my finger. The first AR I was issued was an actual original Colt full auto AR15, [pre M16] with no bolt assist.

I will also add that I have never personally witnessed a round fire when the bolt was closed while loading in any brand AR, and I have seen many thousands of bolts closed with several thousand AR's, but still, better safe than sorry... You will however most always see a small indent in the primer when chambering a round under recoil spring pressure.

If you are not going to use the New Colt AR as a "truck gun", or ride around with it on an ATV, or use it for the Bad Days, it will probably be fine...

Still for me, I would want a Dust Cover...

The 'Bad Days' :D

I like that.

Well I have my FA, and when the Bad Days come and we are all picking up ammo from the ground to fire that one last life saving shot, the one that is your last hope and prayer, (reminds me of hope and change  ) you guys without the FA can eject your final chance at killing the zombie attacking you and I'll just slap the FA and fire that dirty round.... I'll save you guys, just stick with me.... LOL

Can we just get past the FA issue now? It's not needed when you are relaxing on the range with your full cleaning kit and a Mai Tai with the little umbrella sticking out, poking holes in paper targets talking about how bad your AR is... :p
