Found a nice 581 in original box with all paperwork etc. Appears to be un-fired but have way to confirm that. Not really my thing but took it on a trade because it is so nice. It has a serial that starts with AAA, I was told this is a very early serial # for this model.

It is a 581 with no dash. I have no interest in sending it in for any updates, I was told there was some type of revision or something.

Looking for info, value etc. I plan to sell it locally , but want to get an educated asking price first.

I bet you could get $650-$700 for it if your a little patient. That's a nice gun!

+1 with Sailfish. An added bonus is the early guns had the S&W logo on the right sideplate. Switched to the left side somewhere after the AA serial number prefix. Very nice.

Not sure if the 581s, 586s were recalled for a defective firing pin bushing or not. 686s were!

500-600 is what that 581 would go for around here.

Is very nice. Have noticed prices really going up on these quality pieces. Thanks for sharing.

581 no dash and 581-1 "M" recall to install new hammer nose and associated parts - SCSW 3rd ed. page 248

I picked up my 581 no dash five years ago. It actually has German import marks. I assume an American purchased it there and brought it back. I sent mine back with a return authorization from the factory for the "up grades". I had it back in less than three weeks with and "M" stamp. Very good, very under appreciated revolver in my opinion.

I saw you post this on the facebook group, extremely beautiful example of an early game changing frame size from S&W. If I were a little closer, I would try digging through my safe for some trade fodder.

Be patient with selling it, the fixed sight models ( 581,681 ) don't seem to get as much love as their adjustable sight siblings. Very nice looking gun, would be glad to find one in that condition for the right price.
