Thanks for the heads up! I will get some better pics up and a range report when I get a chance. Still debating on shooting the Recon or keeping it unfired for the time being. The SFF is definitely getting to the range ASAP.

Pardon my ignorance but I wonder if anyone can enlighten me regarding the substantive differences between the Shorty45 and the 45Recon (other than the extended, ported barrel and probably PC treatment). Thanks again for all of the great info found on this forum!

Both are PC products, and you're right about the barrel differences -- and the fact that the Recon is a 4 1/4" barrel compared to the 3 3/4" Shorty 45. The Recon was produced for one year only (1999) for RSR, while the Shorty 45 was produced over two years (1996-1997) for Lew Horton. The Recon has a decocker-only feature compared to the safety/decocker of the Shorty. Recons came in three colors -- all black, all stainless, and a duotone version -- while the Shortys were in stainless color (except for a very, very, very few all-black). The Recon 45 came from the PC with Hogue wraparound grips, while the Shorty 45 grips were S&W rounded-back ones, with front-strap frame checkering.

I've never seen production numbers on the Recon 45; the Shorty 45s were produced in totals of 640 for the first version (fixed Novak sights) and 179 for the Shorty 45 Mk II (adjustable LPA sights). I doubt if the Recons were very many more than that, if any, since they only were produced for one year.

Interestingly, the other Third Gen Performance Center .45ACP style of the era, the 45 CQB, was produced in 1998-1999 and was for Lew Horton as well. There were reportedly around 400 or so of these, and four combinations of colors in stainless and aluminum alloy configurations. They had a 4" barrel and a mag capacity of 8 rounds, as it was on the larger 4563/4566-size frame.

I can't speak for the Recon but the Shorty is a shooting machine and one heck of a carry .45.

WOW! Thanks for that incredibly comprehensive and informative breakdown on the "Recon" and "Shorty" .45s, I had no idea that they were actually so different and unique! While I've never been a huge fan of ported barrels there's no denying that they just plain look cool!

BTW I've also always admired the CQB 45.

So do the "Shorty" 45 and the 457 have the same barrel length?

Yep. They're both 3 3/4" barrels. Same for the 4513 and 4516 models.
