We have not heard anything yet. We will call them and ask if we still have not heard anything by this Friday.

Pretty uninteresting end to an interestingly found gun, just questions unanswered.

We finally heard back on the revolver we found. The gun was not registered to anyone. It did not appear to have been used. No idea if it was stolen or lost. No idea how it got there. Not reported missing.

Thanks again everyone that helped out. Stinks that we didn't get any information about it.

I had a house fire with damage to all my guns not in the maxed out safe. The worst was a Remington 1100 that looked nearly as bad as that revolver and it came back from the shop looking better than it did before the fire.

Unacceptable, there's no reason for them to keep it now. I'd say you have more right to it than the PD does, abandoned property is just that and you found it on yours.

I wanted to see this thread end with you getting it back, sending it to S&W to be refurbished, then showing us the gorgeous results.

What's your definition of small town? For some 50,000 is small, mine is <2,500.

I just can't imagine a small town (by my def.) department doing it this way, a bit larger and I imagine the dreaded word liability takes over pushing common sense out of the picture.

Depending on which state, city, and the attitude of the CLEO, some agencies refuse to return guns to lawful owners. LAPD did this for years (even refusing to return recovered stolen property) until the NRA sued them into compliance with the law.

The gun should be yours (not that it's worth much) but if they don't turn it over, they know legal fees to sue for it make it not worthwhile so they win by default.

Given the way I am, if I were allowed to keep it I would let it soak in a bath of Kroil, then break it down completely and copper wool all the rust off of it......try to free things up and then if the internals escaped damage I would try to shoot it with light .38's......

I'm gonna guess it was a hunter's protection sidearm and the metal tab slipped off his belt and it dropped in some leaves, thus making no sound. He realized miles later it was gone and had no idea where he lost it......either that or some kids stole it from their freinds dad and panicked and dropped it in the woods......

Have someone give it a phosphate finish and call it a "shooter with a cool story"

Otherwise it's a wallhanger with a cool story! The damage may be too extreme for this gun to ever shoot again, and it's not worth any cash outlay to try to restore it.

We talked to the person in charge of the evidence room this time. He said we can get it if we really wanted it back, but we need a property report from the sheriffs office and we have to acquire a court order to release it. He also said that before we decide to do anything that the gun was beat up pretty bad when they were disarming it.

Sounds like it might be more trouble than it is worth. No idea if any of the items required to get the gun back could end up costing anything. If they do we will probably give up. Especially since it sounded like the gun was beat up to get the ammo out.

I laughed at that. First thought when I seen it was like this was a hostage/money trade off or something . Lemme see the goods.

We weren't concerned with the condition. As long as the forms/court stuff is free we will try and get it back. If it costs anything we will probably give up, though. Unless it costs a small amount. My dad is retired so he doesn't have a lot of money he can spend into this. Even if it is damaged beyond repair it will at the least be a keepsake with a weird story.

More likely in a town his size, the "armorer" or whoever was charged with making the gun safe, has no training in gunsmithing, and wrecked it trying to get it open to unload it.

I respect what you did and I suppose it was the right thing to do, but "I" never would have turned that in to the police. Thats just me.
