Someone must have had the same idea that I had a little while back. That being to bring an affordable and functional trench knife to market. S.O.A. WWI Trench Knife - BUDK I was dubious at first - it being a PRC made United Cuery product. Still I had read that the SOA lisc 'd products tended to be serviceable. Originally I was not familiar with the SOA and thought it was something made up to sell knives. However it is a legitimate organization and has worked with other knife makers before.
Taking advantage of a penny shipping special I opted to risk 20 bucks.
The sheath now has a rubber gasket with teeth to hold the knife in place. This is good since the riveted on pleather belt loop and security strap are a joke. I will have to figure out a mode of carry.
Unlike past replicas that were closer to the original... this version has a flat on the sides handguard so that it can lay close to the body. That was a common evolutionary modification when the originals were recycled for WW2. Unlike the dull letter opener blades on past replicas this one has a nice point and came sharp right from the box. It seems to stab into things very nicely and is okay at slashing. Thanks to the shape @f the finger holes it works better blade up rather than blade down.
It is a dedicated weapon and not a utility blade. It would be most useful in a tussle and the price point renders them disposable. So far every Marine on the island that has seen mine expressed interest in getting one (though hint to the makers... figure out eother a working molle /pals sheath and or a concealable one) .
Thanks to the vagaries of SC law it is legal to carry - no permit necessary metal knuckles and dirks. Thus this contraption - which is both - is presumably legal. I do not know about other states. I would suspect that in some mere possession may be illegal.
Now to get a hunk of a hog to hang up and make sure it will not break my hand and continues to cut meat. So far it looks promising for what it is designed for and should make for a fun and simple toy for the boys to have handy...
