Hello friends,

I received a phone call today from Texas that I hoped I would not get anytime soon. It was from Billy Branch at Lone Star Gunsmithing in Comanche, Texas.

He was calling about my Model 49 Bodyguard revolver that I had sent down to Frank Smith for repairs. Billy told me that it was his sad duty to inform me that Frank had passed away, and that they were closing the business. He did tell me that Frank had repaired my revolver, and he thought it was the last gun he ever worked on.

I last spoke with Frank on April 14 of this year, and he told me he was sick and had received some bad news from his doctor, but that my revolver was all fixed up and ready to come home. Frank said he would call me in about a week to arrange it. I never heard from him again. I do not know exactly when he passed away. I could not get anyone on the phone after that, and oddly enough had just written him a letter about the gun that I was going to mail this afternoon when the phone rang instead.

Some of you will remember Frank from his many years running a Smith and Wesson authorized repair station. I remember that he was an almost unlimited source of knowledge about all things Smith and Wesson, which he freely shared over the phone at no charge.

He was a good guy, and will be missed.

Another of the good ones gone. I always enjoyed talking with Frank. He had forgotten more about Smith and Wessons than I'll ever hope to know.

Sad news.

Frank was a great smith. He was the last gun smith(1) I trusted in the Dallas area. When he pulled up stakes and moved west, it was a sad day for us left here where the East peters out.

He also talked me out of buying a new CZ-75 and buying a new 1911--from Smith & Wesson of all places! Never been so glad to be upsold, now that I own 3 1911s, 2 of them S&W.

God bless him and console his family in their hour of loss.

(1) With a store front. Other good smiths exist, but getting them to work on your gun is almost an exercise in espionage.

The only smith in this area I would trust. I think I mentioned this before, but when he was in the Dallas area I had an occasion to take a M36 that someone had bobbed the hammer and shortened the trigger return and recoil spring. He said to bring it over, which I did one morning. He told me to go eat lunch and kill some time and he would have it fixed for me when I got back to the shop. Came back later and it was completely restored, cleaned, and tuned up. He told me there was no charge as S&W warranted guns for life, no matter how old they were, for police officers. Don't believe this was true, but didn't charge me a thing. A really great and talented man.

He fixed a Model 10-8 3" HB for me.

We talked on the phone.... very nice guy.

Prayers to his family/friends and rest in peace.
