This is how all those weird mishmashed things appear. First you have a DA 45 1917 Military that someone did a really bad job of modifying into a target model. they ground off the front sight soldered a "target" sight on the barrel then milled off the back of the upper receiver and mounted an adjustable sight on it. Then someone else pruned off all of that leaving it destroyed and you got it in a deal you could not pass up so long ago you dont remember where it came from. Then you look around and remember the .38 cal. Cheshire & Perez custom barrel in the drawer that you could never find an N frame to put it on. Combine that with some early pre Model 28 parts and this is what you get. A long way to go but stuff kind of fits and it looks like it will work. You'd think that if you were 105 years old folks would just leave you alone...but, no.

I cringed reading your description of the 1917. Nice job of using what you had to breath some life into an old junker. Looks good, how does it shoot?

I have a "Frankengun" also- it's an Argentine FAL upper with a British L1A1 lower- but that's nuthin' compared to yours!

Hello RobertJ,
I'm guessing w the Argentine upper it uses Metric
Mags ? I have a like for Fals. I sold my collection awhile back, along w most of my other variants.
Did you camo yours in the So Afrikan scheme?
Sorry to get off topic, just really liked the Fals..
I went back to my luv of S&W Revolvers from my past nowadays..

I picked up a 1917 Frankin gun, I bought it at a really dark gunshow, It's a Brazilian that was put together with parts from 4 different guns. Brazilian reciever, a home produced Brazilian barrel (not S&W produced), a cylinder from a different revolver and crane from ? It works but parts don't fit well.
SWCA 892

I handled a Clark build ppc? gun at a shop once. Really liked the look and feel but it was too pricey and I couldn't justify getting it. But I like your frankengun. Needs electrodes though.

It is not complete yet. Still in the mock up stage. I am waiting for a target hammer, the only piece I did not have. Then final fit on the barrel, fit cylinder and polish all of the internal lock work, time it then shoot it. The stocks are non relieved targets, not cokes. The barre/rib is the only Cheshire & Perez one I have seen made for an N frame. All of the others I have seen are K frame. Just a fun thing to do with some extra parts.

I presume someone is welding a wide spur on a prewar long action hammer.

No, that was a consideration (tried to find a Kings cockeyed hammer) but a prior custodian made it SA only by grinding down the engagement surface on the trigger so it did not make contact with the DA fly on the hammer (kids dont try that at home) so it is ruined and I replaced it with a post war target trigger so a more modern hammer is going in along with a Wolff spring kit. Also weighed it today, 3 lb 12.8 oz. Might have to adjust that too.

Unless this revolver has had a short action modification, I don't think a modern hammer will fit.

Triggers will interchange, somewhat. I once installed a .312" smooth trigger in an early 1900s .32-20.

My guess is that the mags are metric, but I've never checked, because they work. I bought it from my BIL, and it was in hideous condition. However, internally, it was great. I had the outside of the upper dura-coated, and left the lower the way it was, since it wasn't too bad. I was surprised that an L1A1 lower worked with the Argentine upper, but it does. I actually haven't shot it that much as it's not one of my favorites, and I only bought it because the price was too good to pass up.

First pics are what I had to start with. Next barrel and cylinder fitting, then, almost completed project. Still waiting on springs and looks like I will have to weld up a target hammer with what I have here. Thanks for looking. Range report later in the week. Final pics to follow.
