You can't go wrong, most any place in this most beautiful State - Franklin/Brentwood being one of the most desirable areas - go for it!

I travel up and down that area. It seems real nice with lots of upscale areas. There is even a big gun shop. Franklin Gun Shop. I stop in there occassionally and buy small, cheap stuff. If you reload, they have all the primers you need for $45 per 1k and have a good supply of powders. Their bullets are limited to muzzel-loaders. Everything else seems just as high in price. I've never tried to negotiate a price on a firearm, so I don't know if their rediculas prices are firm or not.

Where do you live now? I lived in Tennessee once, and they have some goofy laws. They have no state income tax, but buy a piece of property and they bend you over and extract the property taxes. Car insurance wasn't very expensive compared to Kentucky, but roughly inline with Alabama.
Fifteen years ago, you had to take a class to get your carry permit. If my memory is right, the entire process of class and permit fees cost around $500. Tennessee was the last state surrounding Alabama that recognized Alabama's carry permits.

Good luck

:) I think you will like it there. Cool Springs is one of the
biggest shopping centers in the state. If you are married
that will make your wife happy. As posted before Franklin
Gun Shop is one of the biggest gun shops around but they
are high. There is a new indoor shooting range and gun
shop in Franklin. I have not been there. Spring Hill and
Columbia are two towns you might want to check out to
live in. Welcome to our state. Don

My daughter works there. You'll love it. Gets hot there, though. They keep the mall there so cold in August, you'll need a sweatshirt.

Franklin Cun Shop is the one featured by Jim Scoutten on the series they did on Shooting USA when they blueprinted and built up a custom Remington Model 700. Rocky McWilliams was the gunsmith, and according to the web site, he is still there. He appears to be very competent.

No help with thoughts about a residence in the Franklin area but we stop at Herberts Bar B Que, just of I-65, everytime we go through. Their cornbread is to die for.

I'm in West Tn (jackson)
Franklin is a grat place if you having to relocate it would be in my top 5 places to go for sure.
as to follow up on the hand gun carry permit ..most classes cost 50 (depending on who you go to) and the State of TN charges like 110 to get the actual permit ...not 500 no big deal just wanted to let you know,I like to encourage the permit.
I have a cousin that moved to Franklin and is on the Police force and SHE loves it...nicer income, better benefits and good patrol areas.

Is that the one on The Food Channel??

One of the nicest areas in the middle of one of the nicest larger areas, of one of the nicest regions of the greatest country in the world. What's not to like?

Franklin has grown incredibly in size in the last 20 years, both it and Brentwood are high dollar areas to buy land. A previous poster suggested Spring Hill, that area, right now is where you could find a deal on a place to live. The Saturn plant has closed, or is in the process. Back in the early '80s that area was nothing but farm land, then the plant came and it made overnight millionares out of simple country folk. Now the trend is reversing itself, with the plant closing there will be deals to be found.
Tennesse is in the midst's of a financial crisses now, like all other states, lack of a tax base is suffocating us.
The past few Governors have not pushed a state income tax and therefore property taxes are high, tho compared to some northeastern states are nothing. Most counties around Nashville impose a high wheel tax on each vehicle you own. I have a feeling that a state income tax is imminent, I hate to say it, but there's just no other way to fund the state, I don't like it, just being realistic. It will take a year or two, but it will come.
Overall, the cost of living here balanced against taxes and put in comparison against other states gives us the nod. It is a very beautiful area to live in, plenty of things to do, but getting more and more crowded.
Other than a stint in the military and some roaming I've lived here most of my adult life, and wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

worked there at the home depot while attending college 10 years ago, very nice area. a little ritzy for this farm boy though. murfreesboro, or spring hill area was more suitable (alot less expensive)

I live in SE Tenn, around 200 miles from there, so I don't know the values of land there, but a good thing to do would be to look online for properties, then compare land and square footage of houses to other areas of land within 25 miles of other major cities, that would give you an idea.
My Parents live in Dickson County, they own around 25 acres and a 1600 sf house, built in 1975. It just went on the market a few weeks ago. It is 45-50 miles West of Nashville. Has the house, acreage nice 2 story barn, pond, year round creek, some 12 acres cleared the rest in woods. Loaded with deer, turkey, very private and are asking $198,000. Find something like that elsewhere and see what it would cost. If interested, email me and I can get you in touch with the realtor. Of course it's not Franklin, but a fine place to live.

Nothing but positive replies everywhere I posted - we'll be visiting the area in March any good restaurants I should visit...?

Thanks for all the replies from everyone I really appreciate you people taking the time to help me out on this...!!!;)

I travel to the area frequently on business. The Franklin/Brentwood areas are upper end, in a relative sense. They are higher cost than much of Tennessee, but much lower cost than many areas of the country, for sure.

We like the Murfreesboro area fairly well, although I'd never like to live anywhere that flat! I'm a mountain boy from East Tennessee.

Not sure where the poster came up with the $500 for a TN Handgun Carry Permit. I think classes are always between $50-$100 depending on where you take it, and whether or not you provide your own gun and ammo. The permit itself is $115 I believe.

Tennessee is a great state, as I've said, I like East Tennessee, but if I had to move, I'd sure stay in this state!
