Free antivirus programs. AVAST vs Bitdefender

I have done computer security at work for over 20 years, with all known Windows upgrades and installs, and 30+ years for private security installs. These days, Avast Free seems to be the top contender. It does have a lot of added junk. Ok under the hood, and remove the extras. Ages back, it was Norton. Personally, I pay for a yearly subscription for Webroot on several machines. It catches everything sent at it, or detected.

The only unfriendly thing I can say about Avast is that they do pester you occasionally to upgrade from the free version to a version with more features for a charge. Not necessarily a bad move and it could be worthwhile. I can't blame Avast for trying to make a little money. But I ignore them. Not sure what the "junk" mentioned above is.
