From days gone by...what do you miss most ?

I'm 23 years old. Thankfully my parents have raised me the right way, and I've always been a hard worker, respectful, and to be proud of the work I do, the country I live in, and who I am.

But in my short life... I've definitely seen a lot change. Especially in my generation and the generation below me.

So I miss
-The days where kids respected their parents.

-The days when parents were ACTUALLY parents and took an interest in their kids. Look how many little kids are playing violent video games when they aren't even old enough to understand the difference between reality and fiction. And the parents don't even bother to look at what their kids are playing. This is completely different from the way I was raised because my parents knew what I was playing and they knew I knew it wasn't real.

-The days when teen pregnancy was frowned upon. As opposed to being put front and center on TV

A little bit more personal, I miss living with my family and my dogs. After college I got a job and my own apartment which is 60+ miles away from them. Truth be told, it is close to them but I don't see them every day and coming home to nothing is depressing.

Edit: Oh yea I miss the days of the muscle car. Back when you'd go to a car show and see amazing cars from the past. I miss the days those were what you drove every day, even if I wasn't alive to see it.

I miss a sense of community, a real community, not a facebook community where people have 250 'friends', only one of which they have ever met in person. A community with stability and purpose. A community where you would always see a familiar face each time you visited- at the bank, the store, the tavern, cafe, gas station, Church, etc.

I miss being a part of my fathers race team when I was a youngster (we didn't realize we were a 'team' back then). He ran a stock-car on a shoe-string budget at the local fairgrounds on Saturday nights. Sounds silly to most but we did whatever it took to make the next race, worked our tails off on that racecar each week to get it ready for Saturday night, where family, friends, and adversaries would gather together. All for a chance to kiss the trophy girl in front of the hometown crowd, take home that giant trophy, and have bragging rights the following week in the community.

I miss when full figured, curvy women with some junk in the trunk were considered the hot fashion trend.

:) I think 9/11 brought this country together some, but not enough. It didn't last long enough. We didn't have to work together to over come 9/11, nor were we in fear of an invasion like WWII. The country needs to work on our problems together to solve it's problems like we did in WWII. The people in America don't want to be involved in working on our problems. We are to busy doing other things that are not really all that important.

To answer the original posters question. I miss the time the American people worked together for the good of all. Don

I miss when a "community" was a neighborhood.
When "values" were not as important as virtues.
When "family" meant mom, dad and the kids.
When self-esteem came from achievement.
I miss when I was solely responsible for myself, my safety, my actions.
I miss when responsibility was more important than "rights."
When what you said was what you meant.
When honesty and a handshake were enough.
When dishonoring that handshake was shameful.

Lastly, I miss my dog "Frank."

When is the last time you ever saw two teen age kids rideing in a car with mom and dad?
When I was a kid in the 40s and 50s it was everywhere all the time. At some point I noticed it was a thing of the past. Just this one observation tells a lot about this generation.
1. Regular two parent familys are getting to be a thing of the past.
2. What ones exist, they no longer are close and do family things together like church, vacations or just trips to town.
Am I the only one old enough to notice this gradual change?

I miss fishing with my father and grandfather in our 12 foot boat and 10 HP motor, camping in a tent at Lake Havasu. My father had an expression when we were out in that boat fishing together, he would say; "I wonder what the poor people are doing"!

When you opened the hood of your car and looked at an engine. Not a plastic cover hiding enough sensors, wires, and connectors to launch a astronaught into deep space. The sound of the rattling chains that hold the tailgate of your pick up truck from dropping down and hitting the bumper as you drive down the road. Elvis, the Beatles, and Frank Sinatra on the radio. When you could go to Sears and buy a Henry J car, and a metal lathe. Flathead engines and flattop haircuts{ for men that is}. Most of all, what I miss thee most, when you said to someone " excuse me sir ", and you didnt have to worry about maybe that person was a she???????????

I think really of lot of this skepticism is overstated. Talk to some of our fine young vets who served in Iraq and took pride in our mission over there, because it was the right thing to do. Remember that a lot of the wrong you gripe about today, was with us all along the way, but the modern media wasn't telling you about it all the time. There's just more people, so there's more bad people that we find out about. You don't see many news stories about good people, but they're out there. Look at cars, they may all look the same, and have no charisma, but they are safer and better cars.
Now that I've said that, why is it that a dollar store ain't near what a 5 & 10 store was? I miss local merchants, sporting goods, little grocers, hardware stores. I may miss 25 cent gasoline, but I don't miss working for $1.60 an hour.

The flip side of that for me is excuse me mam, and find out its a guy! Once I was at laughlin at the gold nugget. I had to go to the rest room right now! Made a dash, no one in there. Came out of a stall and there was a fine shaped lady with her back to me looking in the mirror smoothing down her slacks over fine built postierior. I was busted and nothing for it but to say "excuse me, mam. I thought I was in the men`s! She turned around and gave me a real hurt look behind a nice dark mustach! I couldnt say or do anything but howl with laughter as I walked out! Thank God I was about three times her size! Later on I seen him playing drums in the lounge.

Amen. Better yet, go to Walter Reed or Ft Sam Houston, talk to some of our Wounded Warriors. I just spent six months at Ft Sam as a Wounded Warrior, one of the lucky ones. I came home with everything, and most of it still works. But when you see a young Veteran, a triple amputee who has lost both legs and one arm to an IED blast, who says that he's okay because he still has one arm to hold his 18 month old baby girl... Or a young Marine who lost both legs who wears a shirt that says "You should have killed me when you had the chance" under a silhouette of a GI with a prosthetic leg in full battle rattle... Or sit and talk with a senior NCO who is very quick to tell you, "I didn't lose my leg, I donated it"... Or a Special Forces Captain, another double amputee and father of four who can't wait for his prosthetics so he can get back on jump status...

I miss serving with service members such as those who embody the true warrior spirit that built America. Do we have our problems? Of course we do. Is it hopeless? Is America lost, in decline? Nope. Not as long as we have Americans like those. Who is America? Is America a shapeless, faceless entity built of crooked politicians, social misfits, and ignorant, disrespectful youth? No. America is all of us, Forum members included. So when you say "America is this, or America is that", remember, you are talking about yourself, me, your friends and neighbors. I can't speak for anyone else, but when I hear the word "America", I take that to mean me. So, I figure I can either sit and complain about how America is going down the crapper and get all misty-eyed about the good ole days, or I can get off my broken, old, been to war one too many times butt and do something about it. The only way this great nation of ours will fail is if we let it. And if we do, we have only ourselves to blame. Anybody care to join me?

(Sorry, this didn't start out to be a rant, but when I hear people talking about how America is lost and falling apart, well, it gets my back up. We are STILL the greatest nation this world has ever seen, even with our current problems.)

My youth .... Fewer laws ..... A world with a significantly smaller population .... Great gun shows ..... and on and on....

Now there's something from California I can agree with. Left out that .20/gal gas (HyGrade on the Garfield side of the Passaic river about 1971). Joe

CelticSire, I know exactly what you are talking about. Our young folks that are currently serving in the military are the finest....but they seem to be an exception and not the rule.

Yes, there are plenty of great kids....but the moral and ethical core of this country is just not the same. It has changed significantly. Self reliance and self sufficiency are not the same.

We allow our language, customs and borders to be breached and the central government does not defend us, but encourages this insurgency.

Doing the "right thing" is not praised. Being a slacker is encouraged at every level. Entitlement seems to be the word of the day.

I am just disappointed that I don't see a real, concerted effort to take back this country from the criminals now in control and try to turn the corner into a better nation and world for all of us.

Every single congressman should be on the band wagon to cut the debt. There is no excuse not to. This "effort" of a couple of days ago was nothing but an moronic exercise in futility and anyone writing off on that has committed a criminal act.

Yes, this country is falling apart. To say otherwise is just denying reality. It has been a better country....and it could be better in the future, but it will take a national effort that there is no reason to believe it will happen.

Will those that sent the socialist/Marxists to Washington do anything to save this country?

You know all the answer to that.

What do I miss the most from yesteryear?

My mind!

Seriously - I must be mad - I feel so out of place some times - an enigma of large proportions.

Stainz, understanding 'Gran Torino' more and more...

Things I miss...
My folks and fishing with dad,
my grandmother and her cooking,
the Boston Terrier dog I had as a kid,
my Schwinn Corvette bike,
the Rock Island Rocket highballing through town at 10 PM and 2 AM,
the radial-engined Beech 18 that used to fly over every night about 9,
Sky King,
Dick Biondi on WLS,
6 on 6 girls BB tournaments on my first crystal set,
reading DIRSUP trip reports on quiet midwatches.

I was born in 1951, and grew up in a small West Texas town...when I watch the Andy Griffith show now, it seems that life back then was like that. It may not really have been, but that is how I recall it, and how I wish it was now. Life was simple, most people didn't lock their houses or cars, and there was a general sense of morality and decency.

I miss watching "Victory at Sea" on a Sunday with my Dad and generally one or more of my Uncles. They would discuss the battles, and at times thay had actually BEEN THERE.

I miss watching my Dad face light up when he saw the film clip of the US flag going up on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. He was there.

I miss the respect and general politeness most people showed towards each other.

I miss small game hunting with Sport my German Shorthair.

I miss the optimism that was the general belief during my younger years. We never seemed to doubt America and her place in the World.

From my adult years...

I miss being able to conduct the majority of ones normal business..WITHOUT having to consult a stinking Attorney.

I long for a time when the Government wasn't intruding into my life as much as it does today.
