Front sight: confusing ears for center post.

I tried the Steel Challenge match again this past Sunday, in the iron sight .22 carbine division.

Again, the shot timer had trouble 'hearing' my shots unless the SO held it over my shoulder above the ejection port. Problem partially solved.

I had trouble quickly lining up on successive steel plates, often confusing one of the black "ears" with the center post.

Has anyone already worked out a fix? I'm wondering if painting the "ears" a pale color would be better than painting the centerpost red or white.

I don't have much opportunity to shoot outdoors except on match day, which is why I'm hoping to benefit from other people's experience.

The sight on the M&P15-22 is the same configuration sight that's been on US Military rifles since the M1917 Rifle of WW1.

The ears were widened and rounded out out for the M1 Rifle of WW2 because a few folks did mistake the vertical ears of the M1917 for the front post, but that problem was cured in the mid-1930s. M14 has the sight same system. M16 has the same system. See a pattern?

Ummmm, I wonder if this front sight system has been around for 93 years because soldiers and plain ole common folks have trouble shooting it? Yeah, that's rhetorical...

Solution? Learn how the shoot the rifle. ;)

Hi Richard.

The below pics are MBUS and a 15-22 factory front sight side by side. I think the post is easier to pickup on MBUS.

I've always been a fan of H&k's Diopter Rear and ringed Front post.

Oh! *headslap* It was just that simple. Thankseversomuch.

Not to derail my own thread, but your post just proved that all the tens, nay, even hundreds of thousands of soldiers, police, hunters and competitors using electronic/optical red dot sights on their AR's over the last twenty or so decades have been wasting their time and money.

And all they had to so was..... Learn how the shoot the rifle.

;)

No they are not wasting their time with good collimator sights. But the iron sights are still there for them to shoot when all the goodies go bad.

Learn to shoot the M16 sights.

If you go on youtube there is this old man with a range in his backyard and shoots crazy good. He shoots hand guns, assault rifles, shotguns, and a ton of old school guns; only using iron sights. If you watch a few of his vids shooting black plates you'll see how good you can be even using irons. His youtube channel is here: YouTube - hickok45's Channel
