And looks like they've got "the little guy" (44 Rem Mag) surrounded.

Nice!
I use 4227 in the older brother: 445 SM.
I consider it more forgiving than 296 and am willing to give up 100 fps to feel safe and reliable.
No animal is going to notice the difference.
Be aware 4227 can raise pressure above about 80F.
That's about the only downside I can think of.

*- 445 brass, WLR primer, Sierra 240 JHC, COAL 1.9", 31 gr IMR4227
12" Encore barrel

80F 1807 fps
90F 1826 fps

This is not actually one of my favorite loads but one I do have data for at high temperatures.
I get more velocity out of a 260 gr. WFN cast bullet with this powder load.

Assuming you are talking about the 460; yes, yes and uh.. no.
Depends on the gun used of course.
In a carbine, a 300 or 400 grain cast or solid should be fine for buffalo.
In the revolver, just about any animal weighing less than that.
Model 90 Carbine 460 S&W

I would not hesitate to shoot an elk or bear with my 17" Encore 445 using a 300 grain bullet at 1850 fps.

The 1.6" (and longer) revolver rounds are definitely an exercise in excess.
I quit shooting my old Dan Wesson 7445 because I didn't think it would stand up to long term shooting over the years.
I had it fixed twice and then retired it.
The Encore(s) so far are doing fine and have way more rounds than I ever put thru the big DW.
If S&W ever offered the X frame in 445 I would get one yesterday.

What size animal will THAT take down??? Lion, Brown Bear, elephant?

might be a little light for elephant or mastodon as it is a little bit behind the 45-70.
None the less, it will take down nearly any critter he deems fit, and we'd be fools to argue:D

also note that it is a 5 shot revolver for a reason.
With only 5 sun spots in your vision from its retina searing flash, the lack of the 6th leaves you with a hole in the blindness to navigate by.

Love the 460

4227 very good choice with the 300 XTP MAG

I used a 260 grain North Fork CPS to take a grizzly earlier this year.

Used 275 XPB Barnes on Bison, 240 Raptor by Cutting Edge Bullets on Black bear, and a variety of bullets on pigs from 200
225, and 250 XPB Barnes, 240 and 300 XTP MAG, all with revolvers.

200 grain XBP out of a 22" barrel @ 2900 fps ( Hornady Factory loads)
360 grain HCFP GC out of 22" barrel @ 2800 fps

Every bit as good as a 45-70 with light bullets (405 and lighter)

ruggyh, I have to give you the credit for the choice of 300 XTP MAG and 4227 combo. I got it from you. I love how the 4227 meters.

Let the concussion begin! IT is brutal.!

The 460 Mag has 65,000 psi which is more than a 30-06 rifle!

I sold mine, even reduced loads where no fun for me. I'll stay with the 44 mag;)

I worked up a load with a cast 230 over unique, lifted from 45 winchester magnum data.
It's about as mellow as we needed it to be without replicating a 45 ACP
