PHOTO LINK (44PICS): SMITH AND WESSON 1917 191745 - Album on Imgur
For sale is a Smith & Wesson .45 Hand Ejector Model of 1917 that was made for a Brazilian contract of 25,000 revolvers in 1937. Most in the serial range of 181983-207043, with exceptions as usual. This one is serial # 191745! It is the ONLY S&W 1917 in all of production (U.S. and Brazilian Contract) that will have this serial number, as they used the same run throughout production. I can't imagine a S&W 1917 collector who would not think this is the absolute coolest thing to own. All the numbers match (frame, cylinder, crane and extractor)The grips are from a revolver in this contract that is 205959 (14,214 revolvers away). Now back to the history: Most of the revolvers were shipped in 1938 under the first contract (as this one is), with several hundred more shipped in 1946 after the war. Like the U.S. Model 1917 revolvers made by both Colt and Smith & Wesson for the Army during WWI so that the same rounds could be used in the revolver as in the standard M1911 pistol, the Brazilian contract pistols were also chambered in .45 ACP (in moon clips) and .45 Auto Rim. There were only 25,000 made, and far fewer imported back into the United States, making this model even rarer than the original revolvers made for the U. S. Army. The revolver has an import mark from Century Arms . The top of the barrel is marked "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A. / PATENTED FEB.6.06.SEP.14.09.DEC.29.14". The left side of the barrel is marked "S. & W. D.A. 45" and the right side is marked "SMITH & WESSON". The upper left side of the frame is marked with a S&W trademark and the right side with a Brazilian crest and "1937" (they were all marked this way). The backstrap is marked "9033" (which is one of the earliest rack numbers I have seen on these), and the back of the hammer is marked "REG.U.S.PAT.OFC.". Barrel Length is 5 ½". The front sight is a rounded blade atop a rectangular base, fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a square groove in the top of the frame, as is correct for these early contract revolvers using the WW1/ just post-WW1 made frames. These first contract Brazilian 1917's had commercial checkered grips with flat chrome plated medallions. The finish is blued with a case colored hammer and trigger. The finish is original as far as I know. The action works correctly and the cylinder lockup is SOLID on all 6 chambers. The lanyard ring is on the bottom of the grip. The bore and rifling are like new in this revolver. It should be an excellent shooter as well as collector piece (did I mention the super cool serial number, 191745! LOL).
