I have a model 3,ser #30791,cyl#16506. I thought this was one that was shipped to Japan in light of nonmatching cyl #. According to the new Smith bible the range of ser#'s shipped to takata are batch 30263-30392 in 1896 and 32243-32540. Wondering where my ser# falls. It appears to be reblued, caliber is missing on left side of barrel, some very small pitting marks can be seen.
I would like to know the history and maybe whats it is worth. Thanks

I'll guess that your revolver is a NM #3. A publication " The Japanese Chose the Smith & Wesson" (Allen, et.al.) may shed more light on your revolver's serial number. If I get time, I'll check the serial number unless another member beats me to it.

I believe it is safe to say that your revolver went to Japan. A search of the booklet mentioned above revealed the following information on the New Model #3 revolvers:

NM #3, serial number 16,506 (your cylinder number) shipped to Takata & Co. on either June 27 or August 18, 1887. There were 3,064 revolvers in the two shipments. They were serial numbered between 16,402 and approximately 25,000. The list of serial numbers was not recorded.

Serial number 30,791 (frame) was shipped to Takata & Co. on October 28, 1896. There were 1,955 revolvers in this shipment.

Caliber stamps on the barrel were not used at the time of these shipments.
