Ok I know I'm going to get some different answers but what is the difference in Failure to Eject: and Failure to Extract?

failure to extract: the case stays in the barrel. Usually a failure of the extractor to maintain a grip on the rim of the case.

failure to eject: the empty case has been pulled from the barrel, but fails to exit the gun causing the slide/bolt to jam on the empty case.

Also known as "stovepipe".

I only use the term FTE for failure to extract.

Just to be a grammer Nazi, substitute "Chamber" where you see "Barrel"...

Sorry, Mom was an English Teacher ;)

Extraction has to occur before ejection can occur.

It's more precise to use the words extraction or ejection instead of initially just the acronym "FTE", to make sure you're communicating clearly. Really helpful when trying to explain what's happening (or not happening correctly) when it comes to diagnosis of a suspected problem.

Kind of like just using the term stove-pipe, without clarifying whether it's a live-round or empty-case "stove-pipe" problem.
