It was on last night and again, I'm amazed. What an amazing actor Vincent D'Onofrio is. I read he gained the weight needed to play the part, then lost it after filming.

What powerful performance and what a impactful flick.

R. Lee Ermey ... the guy you love to hate. ANOTHER great part. I wonder if R. Lee Ermey (RIP) can act without yelling. Have you ever seen him play a part where he's not yelling? LOL

Saving Silverman. Dog of a movie, IMHO.

I worked a .308 in the mouth suicide once - it was considerably more “dramatic” than poor Pyle’s.

My favorite R. Lee scene is in Seven (Se7en) where he is the police captain. He is chewing out Morgan and Brad for something in the squadroom and the phone on the desk he is at rings. He picks it up, says - This isn’t even my desk! - slams it down, and commences chewing right where left off.

He is real good in The Siege of Firebase Gloria. Doesn’t yell too much but it’s appropriate when he does.

if you get the IFC cable tv channel it is on again today 12:30 cst. I should add that while there are commercials there isn't anything censored. I don't think I could watch this movie censored in any way.

one thing I have noticed and wondered why is that in basic training they are using the M-14. once they get to Vietnam they are using M-16's. when did the Marines change over?

I saw him in an episode of 'House' last night. He played Dr. House's father. I had even commented to my wife at the time that he was rather sedate in that role. I can't think of a time when he wasn't yelling. He is one of my favorites ;)

Great film, great cast, great director. It will never become a re-make.

I was in boot camp at PISC at the time frame this movie depicts. I can assure you it is correct, even to the time of year 3092 came through. I was in 3093, 1969! The DIs were tough but had to be. The USMC joined me, not the other way round. But in hindsight, I don’t regret becoming a Marine! We had ‘14’s in boot but transitioned to ‘16s at ITR. Ginny called me a “boot” the first time I met him. Quite a guy. He’s mounting guard for heavens gates and squaring away the “sheetbirds”!

if you look on YouTube there is a 30 minute documentary on the making of the movie. you will have search for it as I would rather not get dinged for posting it

In 1965 in Army Basic Training, we also used M14's and when assigned to my unit, everyone had been issued new M16's and everyone had to qualify with the M16, all over again, just like in Basic.

I saw some Marine unit(s) still using the M14, in Viet Nam in 1967.

Most likely the reason the M14 was still being used in Basic Training, there wasn't enough, at that time, for all training units to be issued a M16.
